Ford Releases All-Electric Cobra Jet Dragster

Ford Performance has released a one-off battery-powered Mustang Cobra Jet drag car. However sacrilegious some may think this is the numbers are nothing to scoff at.  The battery-powered Mustang Cobra Jet 1400 prototype was built to deliver, you guessed it, over 1,400 horsepower and over 1,100 ft.-lbs.

With those numbers, its no wonder, the electric Cobra Jet puts down an impressive low 8-second quarter-mile. Being battery-powered has its advantages, one of the things you can’t ignore is the unreal low-end torque that is possible.

“Ford has always used motorsport to demonstrate innovation,” said Dave Pericak, Global Director, Ford Icons. “Electric powertrains give us a completely new kind of performance and the all-electric Cobra Jet 1400 is one example of pushing new technology to the absolute limit. We’re excited to showcase what’s possible in an exciting year when we also have the all-electric Mustang Mach-E joining the Mustang family.”

Following the debut of the all-electric Ford Mustang Mach-E SUV – the first-ever, all-electric Mustang, the Mustang Cobra Jet 1400 prototype represents another opportunity to expand on the Mustang heritage and performance while simultaneously incorporating some of the most advanced technology coming to Ford’s future powertrains.

Mustang Cobra Jet 1400 also honors the original Cobra Jet that first dominated drag strips in the late 1960s and still is a major force in sportsman drag racing today.

“This project was a challenge for all of us at Ford Performance, but a challenge we loved jumping into,” said Mark Rushbrook, Global Director, Ford Performance Motorsports. “We saw the Cobra Jet 1400 project as an opportunity to start developing electric powertrains in a race car package that we already had a lot of experience with, so we had performance benchmarks we wanted to match and beat right now. This has been a fantastic project to work on, and we hope the first of many coming from our team at Ford Performance Motorsports.”

To maximize the efficiency and effectiveness of the project, Ford Performance has teamed up with several capable and specialized suppliers:

MLe Racecars – Vehicle builder, designer, integrator and tuner
Watson Engineering – Chassis support and development, roll cage builder
AEM EV – Software and motor calibration and controls
Cascadia – Inverter and Motor supplier

  1. Someday my grandkids will say : I heard that years ago, my grandfather actually drag raced a car that used gasoline !

  2. makes me wonder if they bought or borrowed the technology from tesla, i remember a video some time back where this old man that is involved and highly successful in the investment industry and also electronics, made a statement about we will all be driving tesla’s in the near future.

    Interesting. So it’s battery powered, but uses AC motors? Why else would you need an inverter? And why not just use DC motors?

  4. Drag racing EVs are just a natural progression of the sport. The propulsion source will be electric motors likely for the next century. At least it is not as ugly as a 4 door sedan Tesla.

    • I agree with your first thought, but disagree about the Tesla being ugly. The model S is definitely due for an update, but I don’t think it’s ugly at all. Slightly dated design, but not ugly.

  5. Electric drag cars aren’t new. When I was a kid my friend’s dad built us a scale 1/4 mile. We just called them Slot Cars…I’ve grown up a bit, it was 55 years ago. I have absolutely no interest in anything electric but maybe my razor…
