If you were at the 2018 Jeep Wrangler reveal at the Los Angeles Auto Show recently and were paying attention, you heard head of Jeep and Ram Brands FCA USA Mike Manley either goof or try and slip one by on the press in attendance. Four Cylinder Engine with Hybrid Technologies

The first engine is a two liter turbocharged four cylinder with 270 horsepower and 295 lb-ft of torque. What’s strange about it, outside of the fact that it’s a four banger, is that it makes use of “mild hybrid technology” and also has regenerative braking. This is going to be available in the 2018 Jeep Wrangler models.

Manley said that the 2018 Wrangler was going to be available with four different powertrain options. He then goes on to describe three of them - the four cylinder turbo mentioned above, the 3.8-liter Pentastar Wranglers currently come with and, thanks to overwhelming public demand, Jeep/Chrysler’s EcoDiesel three liter V6.

After describing the diesel engine’s output, he went on to talk about the transmissions and torque management systems that would be available. Almost as an afterthought, five minutes later Manley said, “And talking about more, earlier I mentioned four powertrains… and in addition to the all-new mild hybrid Wrangler, a full plug-in electric Wrangler will be available in 2020, furthering our commitment to all those who value the responsible, sustainable enjoyment of the great outdoors and, very importantly, future-proofing this Wrangler for generations to come.”

Well, there you have it - buyers who want it will be able to buy a Jeep Wrangler that is full plug-in electric. I can’t wait to find out how they plan to lower the Jeep’s center of gravity for the batteries and still maintain a viable ground clearance! Stay tuned - we’ll keep you updated on this surprising announcement from Jeep.
