The collector car market is a blast to follow year in and year out for automotive enthusiasts all over the globe. There’s no denying that fact. It doesn’t matter if you tuned into Barrett-Jackson, or Mecum - whatever auction, honestly - you saw money being thrown around in what seemed like endless amounts. Scrooge McDuck money, where the live bidding we got to see didn't disappoint us.

Do any of you remember this car, perchance? Look familiar? I’m sure some of you gamers out there reading this article recognize it. It’s the Ford Mustang found in the video game Need For Speed! This pretty dope Mustang happened to sell at auction for $300,000. That’s a ton of cash, wouldn’t you say? Well, that amount of money doesn’t even begin to scratch the surface when discussing the cars we're going to spotlight here today. Hell, none of them are even American!

2016 was a good year to be in the collector car market. It was also another great year to be über rich and have millions and millions of dollars. Who would have thought, huh? Having millions to spend on a hot set of wheels would, I imagine, be pretty damn cool for anyone. At least one would hope; if not, you’re irreversibly dull. Sorry, my filter broke there a minute. It happens! What kind of money are we talking about for these super expensive whips, though? A freaking ton! Millions!

Ferrari, Jaguar and Alfa Romeo are the types of automotive manufacturers gracing the top 5 when it comes down to cars sold for the most money at auction in 2016. These cars are beautiful, rare and intoxicating to look at. If you’re into vintage collectible cars, this listicle should be right up your alley.

What a sweet Ferrari, don’t you think? Reminds me of the one you see in the famous movie 'Ferris Bueller's Day Off.' It’s a fantastically funny movie, where in the end something terrible happens to the bright red Ferrari. This one, however, sold for just over $17M in 2016. That’s a lot of cheddar!

Ferraris may wear the color red better than any other vehicle, but silver looks exquisite on this 1959 Spyder Competizione too. It would be a dream to drive, let alone race, a Ferrari like this around a track. If you ever hope to have that option, a car like this will cost you a cool $18M.

In my opinion, this car is the most gorgeous car on the list today. Look at that black paint! Wow, it looks amazing. The Alfa Romeo 8C 2900B Lungo Spider is the most expensive pre-war car on the list today. Heck, it is anywhere in the world. Selling for nearly 20M last year, you can see why it’s the most valuable Alfa Romeo out there.

Definitely not the flashiest car on our list today, nor the most expensive, but it is the only representation you’ll see here of a vintage, collectible Jaguar. This particular car happens to be the D-Type, and it sold for close to $22M last year in Monterey, Calif.

This 1957 Ferrari 335S is one cool car. Cool sounds like an understatement, considering this rare Ferrari sold for over 35M in Paris, France last year. That’s besting the rest of the competition here on the list today by well over 10M. I’d probably just keep the scratch and go with the 1961 Ferrari GT California Spyder pictured earlier, but that’s me. I’m sure that opinion varies widely, as it should.
