The West is known for visceral hot rods, desert-commanding off-road trucks and eye-catching show cars. The Holley Performance LS Fest West is the perfect way to show that and celebrate all things GM and LS V8.
LS Fest has been a staple of Holley Performance since 2010, but the West was begging for their own event. Last year, we finally got our chance with the inaugural LS Fest West. 2018 brought some changes, improvements and expansions with two new exhibitions. This year, we had two live streams on day two from our own Facebook page to help bring the show to you at home.
One of the substantial changes that came this year was combining the Autocross, 3S Challenge and Drifting into a single area. This made getting to and from those events and the off-road or drag racing a much shorter trip. Not far from it were the new attractions – the Hoonigan “Thunderdome” and Mr. Chow’s Side Show, a demonstration of the NorCal car stunting culture that normally takes place illegally on city streets. Basically, it’s doing donuts in an enclosed area, but legally as compared to what often happens.
Drag racing and LS engines just go together, so of course The Strip would be open for all three days with the Three Pedals Rumble, Cam Motion True Street, SAM Tech Street King, Vortech Late Model Heads-Up, Earl’s LS Truck 1/8-mile and MSD LS Outlaw 275 1/8-mile classes. For those not looking for compete or just wanting to run for fun, Hooker Headers opened the drag strip to Grudge Racing and Test-and-Tune as well.
Brian Monello would take LS Outlaw 275 with a 5.026-second ET at 151.68-MPH.
Vortech Late Model went to Josh Elam with a 9.121-second ET at 122.52-MPH via a holeshot with his .186-second reaction time. Dave Beem had a faster MPH, but slower R/T and E/T, turning in a .241 R/T, 9.225 E/T, and 144.06-MPH trap speed.
Travis Condos topped 100-MPH during eliminations but would win with a 7.406-second ET at 94.54-MPH in Earl’s LS Truck.
SAM Tech Street King went to Robert Horton with a breakout win by going 10.183-seconds ET at 123.91-MPH over Wayne Darby’s faster 8.204-second, 166.33-MPH run. Wayne’s Chevy II had a dial in of 8.25-seconds.
Three Pedal Rumble went to Brenda Cox with her near perfect dial-in run. She said she could hit 12.25-seconds and took the win with a 12.259-second E/T at 109.16-MPH in her GTO. Julio Villanueva would break out of his dial-in of 11.75-seconds with an E/T of 11.650-seconds at 116.93-MPH.
Over on the off-road side, with the Nitto Tires Off-Road Challenge, Loren Healy in the MBRP/Nitto Ultra4 4400 rig took the win. This is his older 4400 that might have seen its last race with him behind its wheel. It’s potentially sold, exchanged for his new Unlimited, ready for Ultra4 Racing’s Metal Cloak Stampede at Prairie City SVRA on May 11th and 12th.
Over at the QA1 Autocross Course, Rich Willhoff in his 2006 Corvette Z06 set fastest time with a 32.067-second run, while Duke Langley in his 2002 Corvette set a 32.716 for his second-place finish. Glen Barnhouse took third with a 32.731 in his 2012 Chevrolet Corvette.
On the Super Chevy 3S Challenge, Rich Willhoff once again took first with the fastest combined time of the weekend, a 26.174. Glen Barnhouse and Duke Langley would swap places with Barnhouse, turning in a 26.512 combined time for second place and Langley turning in a 26.598 combined time for third. The Racepak Road Course Challenge saw Rich Willhoff on top for a third time with a 1:22.388 time while Duke Langley took second with a 1:23.440. Jordon Priestly would turn in a 1:23.844 for third fastest in his 2017 Corvette. The Lucas Oil Drift Challenge brought out the youngest winner so far in LS Fest History with Branden Sorensen taking first place in LS-swapped 212 Performance BMW. Second went to Noah Michaels in his Torqstorm supercharged S13 Nissan 240SX, while Ian McDougall took third in his Drift Shop S14 Nissan 240SX Coupe.
