Team Penske Celebrates 60 years with New Exhibit at NASCAR Hall of Fame

Team Penske, also called Penske Racing, debuted in the Rolex 24 at Daytona sports car enduro in 1966, which makes Team Penske 60 years old in 2026. It’s been one of the most successful teams in the sport, winning in all forms of sports car racing, in the NTT INDYCAR SERIES, in Australia’s touring car championship and in NASCAR racing. Roger Penske ended his driving career after multiple successes in Sports Car Club of America (SCCA) driving Porsche cars, as well as competing in two Formula One races and a west coast NASCAR event. As he left the driver’s seat, Penske started the most successful motorsports entity, possibly in the world.

Team Penske has accrued race wins and championships since it formed in 1966, but the biggest successes it has had are at Indianapolis Motor Speedway, where 20 victories in the Indianapolis 500 make The Captain’s team the most successful at IMS.

As Team Penske begins its preparations to earn pole position along with a 21st Indy 500 win and, hopefully take NASCAR’s All-Star race at Dover Motor Speedway this weekend, both the Team and NASCAR have announced a new exhibit that celebrates 60 years of excellence, centered in the Grand Hall of NASCAR’s Charlotte, North Carolina Hall of Fame. Predictably named: “Team Penske 60: a NASCAR Hall of Fame Exhibit,” the display showcases a special collection of Team Penske historical  race cars, artifacts and stories. It’ll open to the public on Thursday, May 21 for a limited period of time.

The new display highlights the people, the milestones and the many defining moments that have shaped this organization. Roger Penske, who entered NASCAR’s Hall of Fame in 2019, has been inducted to many other Halls of Fame: Motorsports Hall of Fame of America (1995), International Motorsports Hall of Fame (1998), Indianapolis Motor Speedway Hall of Fame (2002 – well before his purchase of the Speedway, the Indianapolis 500 and INDYCAR), Automotive Hall of Fame (2015) and Trans-Am Series Hall of Fame in 2025.

The exhibit notes the growth from a small squad to the behemoth Team Penske is today. The Team has earned 48 national championships in sports car, open wheel and NASCAR competition and achieved more than 660 race victories along with over 700 pole positions. “Team Penske is among the most respected, admired and successful organizations in global motorsports history,” noted Winston Kelley, executive director of the NASCAR Hall of Fame. “Partnering with Team Penske to celebrate their remarkable legacy, accomplishments and contributions over the past 60 years, and sharing so many of their one-of-a-kind treasures with our guests, is truly an honor for the NASCAR Hall of Fame team,” he confirmed.

This exhibit is anchored by six team-defining race cars, spanning all four disciplines in which Team Penske has operated, and features more than 50 artifacts and dynamic video elements that illustrate Team Penske’s impact as it continues to succeed in multiple racing series. “When I think about Team Penske and competing in motorsports for 60 years, I think about the people that have helped us get to this point,” Roger Penske stated. “Our ‘human capital’ is our biggest asset. Some of our team members have been with the organization more than 20 or 30 years, and the value of that collective experience and dedication is immeasurable.

“Paired with terrific drivers and partners who support us – along with our drive to race with respect and integrity – has been the foundation of our success,” Penske said. “To have our team’s legacy and the contributions of so many people recognized through the Team Penske 60 exhibit at the NASCAR Hall of Fame means so much to me and our entire organization,” Penske concluded.

Among the vehicles on display are the 1975 Penske PC-01 Formula One car, the first chassis built in-house by Penske Cars as it expanded into international competition, becoming the last American constructor to win an F1 race. Penske’s 1982 PC-10 is on the floor, representing Rick Mears’ dominant CART season when he earned his third title in four seasons. The 2025 Porsche 963 currently racing in IMSA’s WeatherTech SportsCar Championship with Porsche Penske Motorsports, represents the most recent national title for the team, achieved in 2025.

Penske’s NASCAR legacy is, of course, prominently featured in the exhibit and includes the first NASCAR Cup Series car designed and built by the team, the 1996 Ford Thunderbird chassis PRS-001. Other NASCAR displays include the 2012 Dodge Charger that took Brad Keselowski to Team Penske’s first – of five – NASCAR Cup Series titles in a 13-year span. The 2024 No. 22 Shell-Pennzoil Ford Mustang Dark Horse driven by three-time Cup Series titleholder Joey Logan represents the team’s most recent NASCAR championship success.

Access to “Team Penske 60: A NASCAR Hall of Fame Exhibit” is part of all general admission tickets for the NASCAR Hall of Fame. This display is one of several initiatives that mark Team Penske’s 60th anniversary. There have been throwback schemes (David Malukas drove a throwback No. 12 Verizon Chevrolet Indy car in the Sonsio Grand Prix of Indianapolis last week), accompanied by unique digital content, and plenty of fan activities. Fans are encouraged to join the celebration and to contribute to the team’s story by sharing their favorite Team Penske milestones and memories on social media, using this hashtag: #Penske60.
