Maryland International Raceway is suffering a great loss today following a fatal drag racing accident on Sunday. During the raceway’s $50,000-to-win Super Bowl of Bracket Racing event, weekend drag racing warrior Thomas Dunford, from Tazewell, Virginia, failed to activate his brakes or parachute causing his dragster to travel through the sandpit, water barrels, and into the trees at the end of the track.

Shortly after emergency personnel were called to the scene 60-year-old Dunford was pronounced dead. A Sheriff’s Office Crash Reconstruction Team was also dispatched to the facility to investigate the accident. With the lengthy investigation set to take place and out of respect for the fallen driver and his family, the remainder of the day’s racing activities were cancelled.

Anyone who may have witnessed the crash or has additional information is asked to contact Corporal Brian Connelly at 301-863-4816 ext. *1456 or by email: [email protected].

We at RacingJunk.com send our condolences to this driver’s friends and family. Stay tuned for added information about this investigation as it becomes available.

  1. Sad news. Don’t know for sure but it sounds like he was unconscious at the end of the race. Health issue maybe. Can only hope he didn’t suffer. Condolences to the family.

  2. may be it’s time for all car’s not just pro car’s like mine ta/fc and top fuel to have the RF auto shut down along with the parachute deploy system in place, maybe it could of saved him also.
    R.I.P brother…

  3. This time will come to all of us. The hope is that he left us doing his passion. Peace to all his friends and family.
