As the stars of the World of Outlaws Morton Buildings Late Model Series rolled into Bristol Motor Speedway’s dirt track, one driver would move from student to teacher after surpassing his legendary mentor in career wins at this weekend’s Bristol Bash finale.
After kicking off his 2021 season with a Big Gator victory at February’s DIRTcar Nationals, Devin Moran, the son of dirt racing legend Donnie Moran, finally went from student to teacher. After passing Ricky Weiss on the final lap of Sunday’s feature race, this born driver won his second World of Outlaws Morton Buildings Late Models feature of the season and sixth World of Outlaws win of his career.
Before earning one more victory than his illustrious father, Moran would start second behind the recent winner of the Illinois 100 and would drop back a few positions on an early re-start. Despite playing follow the leader behind Weiss for the first 30 laps, Moran used his skill to overcome difficult restarts to catch Weiss in the final 10 laps of this race. As the laps wound down the No. 9 of Moran darted to the top of the track and cleared his nemesis on the front stretch. While Weiss would attempt to race back to the lead, Moran would take off and race to a $25,000 victory.
“It was a pretty amazing weekend in Bristol,” said Moran. “Although we struggled a bit on Friday night, we discovered the issue and after this it was smooth sailing. To come from behind and pass Ricky Weiss for the win was pretty cool and to walk away with both a $25,000 check as well as one for the record books was just icing on the cake.”
Despite finishing 13th, three-time and defending champion Brandon Sheppard continues to lead the points going into the next race weekend in Kentucky.
