Get Off-Road with RacingJunk Every Friday Presented by Nitto Tire and the Nitto Recon Grappler™ A/T
While 2020 held many of us hostage at home, it is a new year and a new season screaming for a new adventure. So, if you are ready to get off the couch and get off-road ride, the following trails will take put you in the tire-tracks of desert kings like J.P. Gomez, Raul Gomez, Bailey Cole, and Vaughn Gittin Jr Although not quite as challenging as King of the Hammers extremes, these five trails for your Jeep, Bronco Sport, Land Cruiser or other off-road trekker journey are sure to leave you feeling like an off-road champion of epic proportions.
RacingJunk’s Top Five Off-Road Adventures of 2021
Moab Rim: Offering one of the toughest terrains in Moab, Utah, this challenging trail is not for the faint of heart. Designed especially for those who love heights, the trail runs along the Colorado River and includes off-camber climbs and obstacles that tilt you down toward an 800-foot fall, killer slickrock climbs and off-camber ledge work with a sand dune and Indian rock art ruin reward at the top. Moab rim is a challenge that lands drivers in a breathtaking place worthy of one of that smiling selfie…Jeepfie…whatever, that’s a thing.
Rubicon Trail: This 4×4 wonderland received its iconic accolades for good reason. Sharing a name with the equally popular Jeep Wrangler Rubicon, this trail is located near South Lake Tahoe, California, and cuts through the El Dorado National Forest as well as the Tahoe National Forest. Along with majestic views, this unique trail also offers a challenging terrain with boulders, challenging twists and turns and even a bit of mountain climbing. This trail even includes places to stop and take a bathroom break and enjoy some overnight camping.
El Camino Del Diablo: aka “The Devil’s Highway” is more than just a fun place to take on a challenging terrain. Running southwest of Ajo, Arizona, this trail runs mostly along the U.S./Mexico border, where conquistadores, settlers, missionaries, and miners once roamed. Although this trail might not be as tough as our top two choices, it is definitely challenging, thanks to built-up sandy sections where tall borders have built up on either edge of the road and sunken spots throughout its historic trail. Just remember to stay on the trail — there’s a reason that U.S. Border Patrol helicopter buzzes by periodically. Don’t forget to carry water and emergency equipment. Once out on the Devil’s highway, it’s a solo journey.
Redneck Mud Park: We agree with our friends at Mud Life Magazine who deemed this park in Punta Gorda, Florida the Redneck Yacht Club. Offering to the off-road community what yachts do for sailboats, the Redneck Mud Park features some of the coolest mud holes hosting live races as well as some of the muddiest and exciting trails that can accommodate ATVs, side-by-sides, trucks, Jeeps, and buggies.
Alpine Loop: Located south of Telluride, Colorado, this scenic byway is a classic Colorado trail. Although parts of this trail do not require a 4×4 you will almost certainly need a real off-road vehicle to be able to handle some of the toughest rugged trails and rocky climbs available. For those who enjoy a bit of scenic history, this trail also includes multiple ghost towns and ruins along the trail that are only accessible using your hard-working four-wheel drive.
