The staff at Mad Media and the Mint 400 announced on August 13th that there will be Baja TT (Trophy Truck) Spec Trucks officially competing in a class of their own in the 2020 Mint 400 March 6th and 7th, 2020 and going forward. The addition of the new competition class will expand an already large field of competitors, making for an even more exciting race.
Although there have been some Baja TT trucks in previous iterations of the Mint 400, they have had to compete in other truck-based classes. Starting with the 2020 race, they will have a class of their own in which to compete. The class will allow tires of up to 40 inches. Horsepower will be limited to 525 horses for the class and they will be allowed to use underdrives.
“It’s been awesome to see the rise of the 6100 Spec Truck Class over the years in the Best in the Desert series and at the Mint,” said Mint 400 COO Josh Martelli. “But there are 30+ teams racing in Baja that don’t currently have a home here in the US. We’re happy to invite them to the Mint next year so they can battle amongst one of the largest classes in off-road racing. All of the details and specs for this and all classes will be coming soon in our official rulebook – but if you currently race in a Baja TT Spec truck you will qualify for this new class.”
CEO Matt Martelli says the 6100 Spec Truck Class is one of the strongest classes in the sport of off-road racing. He added that even though most members of the class are able to operate only on limited budgets, the class rules allow for top-level competition. There were 45 of the “6100 trucks” in the 2019 Mint, out of a total of 549 total entries. There are eight constructors building 6100 spec trucks for teams: Jimco, TSCO Racing, Mason Motorsports, Brenthel Industries, Camburg Engineering, Armada Engineering, Herbst/Smith Fabrication, and Geiser Brothers.
Matt added, “It has always been our goal to use The Mint 400 as a way to unify desert off-road racing. That’s why we added Class 11, two Vintage classes, the Rally UTV class, and this year twenty classes of motorcycles! We have wanted to invite the Baja TT Spec Truck racers to the Mint for years, These teams and this class are an important part of our sport. We welcome all racers to come battle in the largest, most competitive field in off-road racing next March.”
