For the first time ever, the International Hot Rod Association (IHRA) sportsman program will move to an all-bracket racing format in 2018. Next season will include both the Summit SuperSeries and the Summit Sportsman Spectacular programs.

2018 will mark the 17th season for the popular IHRA Summit SuperSeries. It is still currently the leading bracket racing program in North America for Top, Mod and Junior Dragster competitors. Hosted by almost 100 member tracks, the program boasts more than 8,000 active and specifically registered participants, and recently secured a multiple-year renewal from sponsor Summit Racing Equipment.

A major change in the IHRA lineup will be the switch from the class racing-based Summit Sportsman National Championship series to the new Summit Sportsman Spectacular. The new bracket racing-based program consists of 20 races over ten weekends, and is supported by Summit Racing Equipment through a multi-year sponsorship.

This change comes as a result of input from racers, partners and tracks, and follows a five-year effort to improve participation levels in IHRA class racing. The previous touring series saw multiple format changes aimed at keeping the series viable for the racers, host tracks and sponsors. Though there are still some class racers who supported certain events, there haven’t been enough entries to grant a series success.

The new Summit Sportsman Spectacular bracket events are aimed at Top, Mod and Junior racers looking for a fun and affordable double-race weekend. The series will ally with the Summit SuperSeries to grant tens of thousands of grassroots bracket racers opportunities and events designed for maximum value.

Full details of the Summit Sportsman Spectacular will be released as soon as the event dates are confirmed.
