As the United Auto Workers strike against General Motors continues, so too do the layoffs and plant closures. Amid a parts stoppage that GM says is due to the current standoff across the nation, GM will now shut down its pickup truck and transmission factories in Silao, Mexico.
According to plant spokesman Dan Flores, the production at these factories ended yesterday morning. The closure comes after GM closed a Mexican engine manufacturing facility as well as a Canadian truck line in Ontario.
Although these representatives were unaware of how many workers were affected by the latest closure, this shutdown means that GM will not have access to the parts needed for its top-selling U.S. vehicle, the light-duty Chevrolet Silverado.
Now in its third week, the strike involves over 40,000 UAW members, who are seeking higher pay, better protection for their health care benefits and an increased share of GM profits. While management and union representatives met for talks earlier this week, a deal has yet to be made and seems a long way off.
