Most of us are law-abiding citizens that follow the rules of the road. When we want to go fast, we take our cars to the track. When we see flashing lights behind us, we find a safe spot to pull over and curse at our steering wheel. But ever since we were kids, we’ve had that dream of robbing a bank and getting away scot-free, all while looking as cool as Steve McQueen. But the real heart of that fantasy isn’t the money or the crime: it’s the getaway car.  What we dreamed of is that supercool go-fast car, and the reason to drive it like a bat out of hell. Here are the top five cars we dreamed of doing it in.

1.  1970 Dodge Challenger
We all know who the real main character was in “Vanishing Point,” this MOPAR star has always been a popular choice among bad guys on screen.

2.  1984 Ferrari Testarossa

If you were robbing a bank in the 1980’s Miami, this would be your go-to. Some may say jumping in a bright red, screaming V-12 Ferrari might attract unwanted attention. They might be right, but does it matter if the cops are all in Ford LTDs?

3. 1940 Ford Coupe
One of the most popular getaway vehicles used by bootleggers post-WWII was the Ford Coupe. An easy to modify V-8, a big trunk, and stiff springs to keep safe all the white lightning in the back. This car was a must-have.

4. 1970 Chevelle SS Wagon
When you think getaway car usually the words, four-door and wagon doesn’t come to mind, but if you have four big guys and a large amount of loot, nothing is better than a 454 equipped Chevelle SS Wagon.

5. 1967 Amphicar
So maybe a top speed of 70 MPH on land isn’t neck-breaking, and neither is 7 knots in the water, but the sight of waving goodbye to the fuzz as they stomp their hats on the dock is pretty impressive.
