The 2022 Chevrolet COPI\O Camaro will have a new lease on life when it returns to the drag strips of the United States – and wherever it’s approved to race – in 2022, as Chevy has a newly-available 572-cubic-inch Big Block V-8 under the hood.

This new engine is channeling the spirit of the original 1969 COPO Camaro, which was a purpose-built race car created by dealers using the Central Office Production Order (COPO) system to effect builds using Chevrolet’s largest V-8 engine. Their intent was to blow the doors off the competition and, in many cases they did, which made the COPO Camaro a highly sought-after machine. It still is, in its modern-day guise.

The new Big Block COPO 572 has a traditional cast-iron block with four-bolt main caps, aluminum heads, a forged steel crankshaft complemented by forged steel connecting rods and forged aluminum pistons. Excluding tax, title, license and dealer fees, the 2022 COPO Camaro with the 572-cubic-inch engine has a starting price of $105,500.

The 2022 CPO Camaro can also be had with LSX-based Small Block Chevy engines including the 350-cubic-inch supercharged V-8 which is rated by NHRA at 580 horsepower, and a naturally aspirated 427-cubic-inch V-8 with an NHRA-rated 470 horsepower. All 2022 COPO Camaro make use of ATI Racing Products’ TH400 three-speed automatic transmission.

Chevrolet COPO Camaro cars are not able to be street-registered. Engineered strictly for drag racers, they’re sold as a Chevrolet Performance part, competing in NHRA Stock and Super Stock elimination categories. The COPO Camaro comes standard with a carbon fiber hood and with wheelie bars. Buyers can customize their cars with options including a trunk-mounted weight box and with a parachute.

Since re-igniting the COPO Camaro program in 2012 Chevy has built fewer than 700 examples, making this a highly collectible racing machine. In fact, in years past, customers entered a lottery to win an allotment for one of 69 car built annually.

For the 2022 season, Chevrolet won’t be limiting production and orders will be filled on a first come, first served basis. Buyers may also participate in a private tour of the COPO Build Facility in Oxford, Michigan, where each car is tailor-made. The order form for the 2022 Chevrolet COPO Camaro is now available and can be accessed at www.chevrolet.com/performance-parts/copo-camaro.
