300 miles of winding dirt roads, mixed with tight, tree-lined mountain trails and more than a half-dozen water crossings make for incredibly beautiful Eastern Nevada high desert racing. The 2019 Best In The Desert VT Construction Silver State “300” presented byPolaris RZR is a drivers’ favorite, and with more than 30 classes of both 2 and 4-wheeled vehicles, it shows.

Temps were in the 70s, accompanied by clear, sunny skies and, at times, a whole lot of dust. Justin Lofton, racing the YouTheoryTerzo Trick Truck and coming off his Mint 400 win, beat out Jason Voss for both 1st overall and 1st Trick Truck. The Lofton/Voss battle lasted more than two thirds of the race, until motor issues sidelined Voss with under 100 miles to go. Though Voss got his truck running again and crossed the finish line, the lost time was too great and he finished in 12th.

CJ Hutchins finished 2nd overall, in his class 1500 open-wheeled buggy. Harley Letner, driving the Concrete Motorsports Trick Truck, finished 3rd overall, and 2nd Trick Truck. Kyle Zergensen won in the 6100 Class. Reigning Best In The Desert UTV Pro Turbo champion Phil Burton won in the Pro TV Turbo Class, and took an astonishing 21st overall. Erin Simmons took 1st in the quad class, backing up his 2018 win. Seth Quintero, points leader to date, won in the UTV Production Class, besting 2ndPlace UTV Production finisher, Mike De Ley. Skyler Howes took 1st motorcycle in the Open Pro Class.

Overall, the Silver State 300 is an incredibly fast, challenging race. The number of drivers sidelined by mechanical failures, trees, you-name-it, is a reminder of why we travel to places in the middle of nowhere to watch teams bring everything they’ve got to simply finish, let alone place. It’s not for the faint of heart.
