The International Hot Rod Association (IHRA) is restructuring its divisions, after feedback from participants, racers, marketing partners and track owners. IHRA suspended much of its 2024 calendar in order to make changes that would best benefit everyone involved and improve the product placed in each water box for competition.
“Shortly after we announced plans to realign and consolidate some of our divisions for 2025,” said Kenny Nowling, IHRA president, “I received several emails, messages and phone calls from racers and track partners. As president of the IHRA, I will always strive to do what’s best for our racers, track partners and marketing partners, regardless of the outside noise. We were able to make changes to have a solid division lineup and a solid schedule for our Team Finals and World Finals for 2025,” he said.
The largest of these changes occurs in Division 1, which is including neighboring tracks from Division 9, now folded into Division 1. Division 1 includes eight track partners in North Carolina, South Carolina and one in Virginia. Division 2’s nine track partners come from Kentucky, Missouri, Arkansas, Mississippi, Illinois and Tennessee. Division 3’s six tracks are located in Maryland, Virginia and Ohio, while the nine tracks in Division 4 come from Louisiana, Texas and New Mexico.
IHRA Division 5 has eight track partners in Indiana, Wisconsin, Kentucky and Ohio, while the three Division 6 tracks are located in Iowa, Manitoba, Canada and South Dakota. Division 7 is located in California and Hawaii and has four track partners, seven Division 8 partners are located in Alabama and Tennessee. Each will hold its individual Team Finals in late summer or early fall, the IHRA stated. Some venue dates are locked in; others are yet to be determined.
The objective, Nowling stressed was to make each division stronger and more capable of producing better shows for IHRA fans. Another objective was to reduce travel times and costs for all participants, which is a problem for all motorsports entities. Nowling anticipates IHRA’s “Return to Glory” being a grand success and stated more detailed looks at each division will be on IHRA.com and on the sanctioning body’s Facebook page.
