One of our readers, Michael Sipe, had quite the journey on RacingJunk and it reminds us how small of a world our community is!

Below is Michael's story:

I have been on RacingJunk.com many times before looking for a car to purchase – '66-'67 Nova; '68-'69 Dodge Dart – something that I really liked! Week after week, at night after work til bedtime, I would find a few cars that peeked my interest, but nothing rang a bell. I found a Green '71 Dodge Colt that needed to be completed. I emailed the guy several times about it and he said he would sell it to me for $5500.00. However, it needed a lot of work, time, and money, so I decided to keep on looking.

A few weeks later, my Girlfriend and I were down in Jekyll Island, Georgia, at the Caffeine & Octane Car Show. We met an Older Gentleman, Richard, who had some really Classy Mopar cars – '61, '62, '63 Dodge cars. He was entering them into the show. So I offered to help him get them in place for the show. As a thank you, he offered to buy our Supper that night. We went back to our hotel where we were all staying, cleaned up, and met later for Supper. I told him I was looking and possibly wanting to purchase a Mopar. Richard said he had a friend in Florida named Sherwin that had a few Mopars that he was thinking of selling in the near future. Sherwin wanted to sell the cars so he could get a Dodge Hellcat. I told him that I may be interested in purchasing one. Richard told me that his friend had just listed one of them on RacingJunk.com and that I could go on the Website and look at what he was selling.

So after Supper, we went back to our hotel room so I could get on Racing Junk.com. Low & behold, there was '74 Dodge Colt Pro Street Car that I fell in love with! Back in the 1980s, I worked with a friend who raced a '71 Colt in the Pro Stock division in IHRA for a few years. Always loved the little car and wanted to buy it so bad! So I was beyond excited when I found this one! The next day, I sent a message through RacingJunk.com website to Sherwin and three or four days later, he responded. He gave me his number and so I called him. Sherwin told me all about the '74 Colt which was listed for $32,000, which was more than I could afford at the time without selling one of my other vehicles. I told him I would have to think it over and I would be in touch with him in a few days. We went back home and I began trying to figure out which vehicles I could sell to come up with the money. In the meantime, another guy named Rick, who lives in Kentucky, messaged him several times about the Colt. Rick was wanting to make a Drag Car out of one.

Four or five weeks later, I called Sherwin to let him know that I was still trying to come up with the money. He told me he had a guy in Tennessee, named Ronnie, who had made him an offer and was going to purchase the Colt. I told him if Ronnie buys the Colt, to please let me know. Ronnie came on that Saturday morning to pick it up. I was just Heartbroken!!! I called Sherwin that afternoon and the deal was done. However, Ronnie is a tall guy and he told Sherwin that it was a little tight for him to get in. But Ronnie was determined as he had driven for 9 hours and he was taking it home to Tennessee. Ronnie told Sherwin that later on if it was not for him after all, he could always resell it. Sherwin said to Ronnie that he knew of a man in North Carolina that would love to purchase it! If you do decide to sell it, give him a call.

Three more months go by, and I am still searching for something to purchase. I had finally sold some vehicles and was going to another Car Show over the weekend. My phone rang that night around 9:00 pm. My Caller ID said Tennessee. I thought I don't know anyone that lives there. But something told me to answer the phone. To my surprise, it was Ronnie who had bought the '74 Colt. He had decided to sell the '74 Colt due to him having to have knee replacement surgery and he would not be able to drive for a while. Ronnie knew how interested I was in the car and he had kept my number. He wanted to offer it to me first before he listed it. We discussed the price he wanted for the Colt. I told him I was going to a Car Show on the weekend and if I didn't find anything, I would call him on Saturday night. I really didn't find another car that struck my fancy. And to be honest, the Colt had captured my heart. I called Ronnie that evening and told him we would drive up the next day to look at the Colt.

So we headed out for Tennessee. I was so excited I could hardly stand it and could not wait to get there! When we pulled up, Ronnie had cleaned it up and it was sitting in the driveway.  As soon as I laid my eyes on the Colt, I fell in love with it and knew I was going to purchase it somehow. I jumped out, met Ronnie, and sat behind the wheel and cranked it up. I was completely hooked! My Girlfriend and I drove it around town and then drove back to Ronnie's house.

With a big smile on my face, we talked for a while and Ronnie said let's go grab a bite to eat. We talked over lunch and agreed on a price. I told him we would be back on Wednesday morning with a trailer and cash in hand. With the help of my very Special Girlfriend,

we came up with all of the cash.  On Tuesday night, we hooked up the trailer and made it ready for our trip. I was beyond happy and could barely sleep that night! Wednesday morning we took off for Tennessee to pick up the Colt and head home to North Carolina. Since my purchase, the '74 Colt has been featured in several magazines and won numerous awards.

A few months later, we were at a Mopar Show in Norwalk, Ohio, that Richard had told us about. He was going and said it was a Wonderful show.  I really wanted to take my '74 Colt, but my new enclosed trailer had not yet arrived. So much to my dismay, we went up to the Show without it. The Mopar Show was Awesome! As my Girlfriend and I walked around looking at the cars and the swap meet area, we met a guy with a sign around his neck. It said, “Wanted, Colt Parts.” So I struck up a conversation with him and asked what he was needing. He said, do you have a Colt? I said, yes, I had bought one over the summer. He asked if I had any pictures of it. So I showed him some pictures, and he said, you are the man who bought the Colt from the RacingJunk.com website. He then showed me pictures of his Colt. It was the same Green '71 Colt that I had previously been messaging the guy about on RacingJunk.com for $5500. I told him, you are not going to believe this, but I had been inquiring about the same car. Then he said, this is even funnier...I have been talking to Sherwin in Florida about the same Colt you have! If you haven't guessed by now the man with the sign around his neck, was none other than Rick, the man who wanted a Colt to make a Drag Racing car. What a Small World! Rick and I have been friends ever since! We have been at some of the same car shows and have a Big Dodge Colt Nostalgia Drag Race Car Show planned for this September in Kentucky. And we have started a Dodge Colt Car website as well.

I am sure that RacingJunk.com has helped connect a lot of people through the thrill of finding new cars and becoming fast friends. For me, this has been true. Many thanks go to Jim Sweener, Director of Sales & Business Development, at RacingJunk.com who I recently met at a show in Hickory, NC, and he encouraged me to write this story.
