From the Steel Palace to the Clay Palace

From the Steel Palace into the Clay Palace

Oswego Speedway wrapped up the 2017 season last week, and without pausing for breath, DIRTcar Racing crews immediately got to work transforming the historic speedway back into a dirt track, turning the Steel Palace into a Clay Palace for Racing’s Biggest Party. For the second year in a row, Oswego Speedway will host NAPA Auto Parts Super DIRT Week Oct. 1-8, 2017.

Preparations began two weeks earlier than last year, so the racing surface is sure to be set up to provide the best-ever NAPA Super DIRT Week. Last week, crews skirted the asphalt with jersey barriers, raising the famous inside steel wall higher. Over the weekend, they laid numerous truck-loads of mulch over the asphalt track, preserving the racing surface, aiding necessary drainage and hopefully making it easier to clean up later. The next step is to pour almost 9,600 cubic yards of clay on the track – close to 600 truckloads – onto the track. Below, you can see the process as it was done last year.

NAPA Auto Parts Super DIRT Week will begin with early parking for campers on Sunday, Oct. 1. Early Bird tech inspection starts Monday, Oct. 2. On-track activities begin just after the procession of cars through the streets of Oswego on Wednesday, Oct. 4 at roughly 12 p.m. The Billy Whittaker Cars 200 should begin at 2 p.m. on Sunday, Oct. 8, with opening ceremonies at 1:30 p.m.
