We recently caught up with our "No Shows No Problem" winner Roy Bryson and his 1969 Chevelle SS. We asked Roy about his build and how he got into this industry.
I have always been interested in drag racing (I set a NHRA National Record on a Kawasaki in 1975 running 10.20 @ 134.17 MPH). I've loved and owned Corvettes, but I always dreamed of owning a blown BBC powered Pro Street car.
5 years ago, I purchased the Chevelle from Texas. It was a driver and only had 250 miles on a 555 Dart motor. We enjoyed driving it, showing it and drag racing it. The 731 HP Dart was fast and reliable, but when the opportunity came up that I could buy a supercharged BBC with a ton more horsepower, I jumped at the chance. The motor runs on pump gas and has previously run 9.60s in a Nova.
We pulled the Dart motor and began a 12 month project of upgrades. We re-worked the engine compartment by building a smooth firewall, molding the frame rails, hiding all of the brake lines and line-lock, hiding all the wiring, and re-finishing the engine compartment in gloss black. The TH400 was race built to withstand the new motor's power. The Gear Vendor allows is to cruise at 2500 RPM @ 75 MPH. She runs cool below 180 degrees (195 on 95 degree days).
Below is some build details on Roys Chevelle.
