The Syracuse Nationals, put on by the Right Coast Association, is one of the largest car shows in the East Coast, held at the New York State Fairgrounds in Syracuse, NY.
The show features a car corral, swap meet, and acres of vintage vehicles from hot rods to stock muscle cars to the hybrid in between.
As part of the event, the pinstriping community comes together for Artie’s Party, an auction of pinstriped items — many done at the show — that are auctioned off to benefit the Ronald McDonald house charities. One of the auction items is three minutes in a nostalgia funny car drag car, and that is a sensory explosion! The winners almost always stumbled out of the Frantic Ford or Super Camaro with a giddy grin, ringing ears, and the sent of alcohol and nitro in their nose.
Despite some challenging weather (blistering heat and humidity on Friday with a sudden, vigorous rainstorm), the show was a welcoming, entertaining way to revel in the classic car fervor (and learn the value of the state fairgrounds secret weapon – the wine slushie).
