Would You Trust YouTube Over Your Local Mechanic?

The race and enthusiast community is a place where DIY thrives — everything from swapping tires to swapping engines is the norm around here for project cars, race vehicles, and more. And for stuff that’s beyond the enthusiast, most people have a go-to shop or mechanic with more knowledge, better equipment and a higher skillset.

However, not everyone is as comfortable working on an engine or other parts of a vehicle but is also wary of the auto shop. We all know how expensive mechanic bills can be (who hasn’t ordered parts of the internet to save a little when it comes time for a repair). But, where do you draw the line? When do you attempt to do it yourself vs take your vehicle to the shop?

Our friends over American Trucks dug into this issue, with an eye towards people turning to YouTube for DIY fixes. What they found is a little surprising. For one, it seems that Dodge owners are most likely to try their hand at DIY. (Yeah, that tracks). And that Tesla owners were the most likely to ignore manufacturer warnings to NOT fix their own stuff. And, about 50% of those DIYers made the problem worse. We’ve all been there!
