A seasoned competitor in top-tier sports car racing, Johnson’s journey took a dramatic turn on October 20th when his rental car struck a deer shortly after departing Watkins Glen racetrack. The accident caused severe facial trauma and multiple skull fractures, necessitating an emergency LifeFlight to Upstate Medical University in Syracuse, New York. Thanks to the skill of first responders and extensive emergency surgeries, Johnson began his road to recovery.
Defying the odds, Johnson made a remarkable return to racing just weeks later. He piloted a BMW M4 GT4 during the World Racing League event at Sebring in November and secured a victory with Team ACP – Tangerine Associates BMW at the Circuit of the Americas (COTA) WRL race in Texas on December 7.
“Steve McQueen once said, ‘Racing is life. Anything that happens before or after is just waiting,’” Johnson reflected. “In late October, an accident outside the track nearly ended my career and my life. That’s why winning at COTA just six weeks later felt so incredible. I am beyond grateful for the life-saving efforts of the first responders and medical teams who made my recovery possible. Billy Johnson’s racing career began humbly but has been nothing short of extraordinary. Starting in go-karts at age 13, the California native and Japanese American quickly rose through the ranks, earning scholarships to race in the Skip Barber Racing School and Formula BMW USA. Over the past 19 years, Johnson has competed in premier events such as the 24 Hours of Le Mans for Ford, the NASCAR Cup Series with Richard Petty, and numerous international series including IMSA, British GT, and Lamborghini Super Trofeo.
