The madmen over at Hoonigan and Subaru Motorsports USA just released Aussie Shred, the newest—and easily the craziest—Gymkhana film to date. Travis Pastrana heads Down Under for his third installment, ripping through the Outback, Sydney Harbour, and the legendary Mount Panorama behind the wheel of the all-new Subaru “Brataroo” 9500 Turbo.
Built by Subaru of America and Vermont SportsCar, the Brataroo is a reimagined 1978 Subaru BRAT turned into a full-blown Gymkhana monster. Yeah you heard tha coorrectly. Remember those tiny ‘utes’ that had those insane seats in the bed? Yeah, one of those with a fire-breathing turbocharged 2.0L boxer cranking out 670 hp and 680 lb-ft, active aero, and engineering pulled straight from rallycross, the truck is designed to slide, jump, and survive every insane stunt Pastrana throws at it—including a 160-foot canyon jump and a sketchy skim across a deep lake.
The film packs plenty of Australian star power too: Toby Price, Chris “Atko” Atkinson, Nitro Circus riders, V8 Supercars drivers, and even Mighty Car Mods make appearances. There’s even a rolling drag race down Conrod Straight and a proper Aussie “shoey.”
For Hoonigan co-founder and action director Brian Scotto, shooting in Australia was long overdue and a full-circle moment for the franchise. Aussie Shred pays homage to the late Ken Block while pushing the limits of what a Gymkhana project can be—both behind the wheel and behind the camera.
Hoonigan partnered with Subaru, KMC Wheels, Mercury Marine, Heat Wave Visual, Dixxon Flannel, and Yokohama Tire to bring the film to life.
