Default What kind of problems with the 867 pontiac sbc 23 deg heads?

on another post, people said there were some problems with the old867 pontiac nascar heads and also someone said they would never use a power adder with those heads. Please tell me what kind of problems those heads had in the past and the problems with using power adders on those heads.

There's no problems using power adders with those heads, ..
they are good heads.

BUT, .. if you are going to buy a used NASCAR head you need to
have a professional check the heads out. Often that stuff is sold
by teams cause it's worn out or was damaged in some way.

Just use proper caution before building an engine with them, . .
have them checked out.

The only problem with them is 20 year old technology,if your looking for power 23 deg heads would be like buying a 20 year old computer,they will work, but nowhere near like modern stuff.Head porters have made huge advances in the last 20 years.Bill

Default problem with using later model heads- no blower manifold ava

if there were blower manifolds available besides the outrageous sheet metal ones, i would buy later model heads, but when using a blower and injector on alcohol, i rarely see anything other than 23 degree stuff on those blown alky engines. Is it because they make enough power for what there doing and the cost of newer stuff is not necessary?
Also those pontiac heads i was talking about buying were a brand new set hendricks had on the shelf and were never used. A friend of mine bought them new and have only 50 passes in a 388 monza that ran 8.50's in the quarter on straight motor. Car weighed around 2200 lbs.
Is there really much advantage going with the newer 18 degree, 15 degree, or whatever when your running blown alcohol?

You have to decide what your goals are and let that dictate what parts
you use to get there.
There is nothing wrong with 23* heads at all, ..
if that is what fills the need. It's silly to call them 20 year old technology.

( The first Americian V8 was built in 1914 and the Chevy small
block as we know it showed up in 1955)

yes 18*, 15* or 13* heads are better in some ways, .. a better flowing head
makes power in a boost application, .. better heads make power
in any application, .. but is it needed to reach your goals?

From my understanding, .. you want to build a blown alky small
block for a boat, .. but this is a week end fun boat and not for
some racing class, .. you want a reliable amount of HP and not
a ton a maintenance?
