1971 Chevy Camaro Rally Sport - “Roller” - VIN #124871L518236
The Backstory: I purchased the car in 1996 as a running and driving vehicle in Southern California. It had the original 350 c.i. / 245 h.p. engine and Turbo 350 transmission. The car was complete, but far from pristine. The body was a little beat up, and I later found receipts for a left rear ¼ panel replacement, and some work on the right rear corner from a local body shop. I drove it a bunch and then converted it to a 4-Speed. I drove it a bunch more and then decided to take it road racing (think Trans-Am with some modern parts). The conversion consisted of a custom roll cage from the guys down at Autopower in San Diego, stripping the car down to fighting weight and building it back up with suspension parts from Global West, a Ford 9” Currie rear axle (with a tiny bit of camber added), big brakes, Lexan front and rear, custom fabricated rear “firewall”, a fuel cell, etc. The body got cleaned up with reproduction fenders, the original RS nose (modified a bit), some cleaning up of the bodywork, and a fresh coat of paint. The car raced with NASA in the American Iron Extreme class for one year. I then experimented with the idea of dropping the body down over the subframe (those slots in the floor, and the now incomplete Global West Sub-Frame connectors) and running an alloy Big Block, but those grand plans stalled, and the car went into storage for about 15 years.
The Rebuild Plan: I wanted to convert the car back to “street” use. I removed the front half of the roll cage, the Lexan, racing seat, fire system, aluminum dash, race-only wiring harness and switchbox, etc. The plan was to rebuild the interior (ahead of the remaining roll bar and cross bracing) with the parts I saved from before going racing (I did sell off some things). Unfortunately plans have changed, and I need the Camaro’s spot in the garage.
