Are you looking to make 500hp on motor alone?
If so you are going to need to up the compression, some really good heads and a roller cam to start. But that's just my opinion.
Be ready to spend some $$$.

Well if it was me I would at least start with a 383 with all forged parts. You could use your existing block for starters.

X2, you can do it but you will definately need a good set of heads, a 750/850 dbl pumper carb. I've got a flat tappet cam that will make that much HP and more, i'll post the cam card if you want, Also i'll guarentee you that are pushing limits of the Scat 9,000 crank at 500 HP. This i speak from experience after building a 388" for a friend with a cast steel crank on alcohol. It ran 6.39 @ 112 1/8 mi for about 40 passes in a 3000 lb Camero. It pulled the #2 main web right out of the blk spun 3 mains and cracked the blk all the way up into the lifter bores. That crankshaft was running around like a jump rope.

You didn't say what the intended application might be, but lets assume an all around wide range powerhouse, and not strictly drag racing.
This is just my opinion now... it can be easily done...
JR Motorsports 109H (hardened nitrided solid) cam, and good Comp or Crower lifters with oiling hole in the face. Yes, this is a circle track camshaft, but everyone knows that circle track cams give the most low and mid-range torque and usable horsepower, this one 3000 thru 7600.
If going with steel heads, Dart Platinum II 215 or 230 with 2.06 1.55 minimum, or World Products Sportsman II with same.
Intake - Edelbrock Super Victor, or Hurricane tall.
Carb - Pro System SV1, Braswell, ProForm Quick Fuel, or possibly the new Holley HP hybrid (I haven't tried one yet?), 750 to 850 depending on application.
This is what most dirt car builders are using with your specified bottom end, and we are making 500+ wide range power every time...
Again, just my opinion... take it for what its worth.

I saw an x-ray of a flathead at 5,000 rpm. Granted they don't have enought mains, but that crank was flexing like a snake.
