View Full Version : What a joke 4 lane racing is

I'm very disappointed that NHRA went to the 4 lane racing. It may be good for the seated fans at the track, but it's BS for the telavised viewer. It's too confusing in my opinion, to many #'s to keep up with. This is not new too me since i ran it in the 60's at both Great lakes dragway Wis. and at Rockford dragway in Il. it sucked then and it still sucks today. I know a lot of the forum users are not old enough to have experienced these 4 lane races, and didn't even know that they have already been done in the past.
I hope NHRA never ever does this again, i want to root for the guy in the next lane, not someone a 100 ft away who doesn't even know who he is running.

4 lanes of racing reminds me of "Spinal Tap"
"Our amps go to eleven"
Nigel Tufnel: The numbers all go to eleven. Look, right across the board, eleven, eleven, eleven and...
Marty DiBergi: Oh, I see. And most amps go up to ten?
Nigel Tufnel: Exactly.
Marty DiBergi: Does that mean it's louder? Is it any louder?
Nigel Tufnel: Well, it's one louder, isn't it? It's not ten. You see, most blokes, you know, will be playing at ten. You're on ten here, all the way up, all the way up, all the way up, you're on ten on your guitar. Where can you go from there? Where?
Marty DiBergi: I don't know.
Nigel Tufnel: Nowhere. Exactly. What we do is, if we need that extra push over the cliff, you know what we do?
Marty DiBergi: Put it up to eleven.
Nigel Tufnel: Eleven. Exactly. One louder.
Marty DiBergi: Why don't you just make ten louder and make ten be the top number and make that a little louder?
Nigel Tufnel: [pause] These go to eleven.
NHRA VERSION
NHRA: The pros all race 4 wide. Look, right across the track, racecar, racecar, racecar and...
Race Fan: Oh, I see. And most tracksrace 2 wide?
NHRA: Exactly.
Race Fan: Does that mean it's louder? Is it any louder?
NHRA: Well, it's two louder, isn't it? It's not two. It's four. You see, most tracks, you know, will be racing two at a time. You're racing two at a time, two at a time, two at a time, two at a time, you're racing two at a time. Where can you go from there? Where?
Race Fan: I don't know.
NHRA: Nowhere. Exactly. What we do is, if we need better ratings, you know what we do?
Race Fan: Race 4 wide?
NHRA: 4 wide. Exactly. Two louder.
Race Fan: Why don't you just race two cars down the track with no down time?
NHRA: [pause] These race 4 wide.

I understand Bruton is putting loop-da-loops at the 500' mark next.

I think it would be better to run 2 and have the other 2 doing the burnout and staging. They could at least give you enough time to look at all 4 lanes times and rt's.
It has a cool factor but not a watchable format.

Didn't like it at all. Another NHRA failure. I'm surprised they didn't raise the entry fee or spectator fee 4 times. What a joke.
Hey Zip, Now I'm close to your age.

Now, that I would have drove the 30 miles to Concord for!!!
I still have matchbox dragsters that do that. I just have to put two tracks together now, I guess. Come to think of it, I never liked the three ring circus either. I always left thinking I missed something.

HaHa,qtrmile2,
Hey Zip, Now I'm close to your age. .
Man i'm older than top soil, soon the be older than dirt. I've seen your picture and saw you on TV, you're not that close.
My only salvation is that i'm still racing and enjoying it @ 71. Chris Karmisenes (misspelled) is still doing it at 81. I hope i can also. I knew Chris back in the 60's and used to buy his used slicks. My car was only a BG/S car and only ran 10.30's. But back to the 4 lane racing. at least one accident can be attributed to the 4 lane deal and that being the Robert Heith crash, had this happened on a 2 lane race he would have shut it down, but since he couldn't see the other 2 lanes he tried to stay in it. It could have been a lot worse than it was.
Also there was a lot of unexplained DQ's
Example the cars once prestaged they had .007 to roll in or get timmed out, what happened if someone went in and lite both bulbs by accident, does everyone get timmed out if they don't stage in .007 seconds. We've all done this by mistake or on purpose to rattle the guy in the the lane. I do it all the time to shake up the compatition, it's not illegal.
Just That, It sucked in my opinion, and yes i heard that they did raise the gate entry fee for the spectators.

I would like to see (feel!) it in person! I kinda thought it was cool but Tim Wilkerson hit the nail on the head in a interview when he called it a "novelty". I know it was confusing for some of the drivers. I am hoping the finish converting Vegas to 4 lane so if we do decide to go out there in the fall I can at least say I saw it once.

Sorry Zip, But I'll be 59 this August. Is that close? Ha Ha, I know how old you are and I think that's awesome that you do what you do. Like I saw somebody else post I hope I can do what your doing at your age too.
Good luck this season and keep on going rounds. :)
