A 2000 or 2500 will work just fine.

It depends on how you're going to use it. If you are going to load & unload with it all of the time spend a couple of extra bucks and get a better one, I would suggest a superwinch or warn in the 3,500 to 4,500 lb range. It will not only hold up better but it will load and unload a lot faster. If it's just for loading when the car is broke and will only get occasional use the 2500 lb. would be ok. Keep in mind that if you say break a rear sometimes they will try to lock up and a heavier duty winch is more likely to be capable of dragging it on the trailer.

Mount it on the side of the trailer and pull through a clevis hook and pulley at the front it will almost double the power of the winch. I use a el cheapo harbor freight winch that is portable...mounts on a quick release plate and it pulls my 3100 lb car up on my trailer just fine...it is a little slow but it does not get hot (knock on wood) But I only use it to load up at home cause The car lives at my fathers house and he lives in a housing addition and does not like me to run it any more than needed due to noise and upsetting neighbors.

Be careful of some of the cheaper ones. They only power in one direction and just freewheel out. That kind is useless for unloading.

Mount it on the side of the trailer and pull through a clevis hook and pulley at the front it will almost double the power of the winch.

That will only help if you double the line. You would have to hook your pulley to the car and anchor the hook end of the cable to the trailer to gain any leverage advantage.

I also bought a chepo 2500lb from Harbor Freight. $69 buck and it has a key pad remote too!!! works ok, but SLOW because i have to use a snatch block to make it pull my 3,700lb truck. go for at least a 4500lb and it will save you some bucks in the long run!!

Right...it has a block and tackle (I think that's what they call it??)type thing hooked to the car...cable hooks to an I bolt at the front of trailer. The other pulley is so I can mount it over to the side to a plate I welded in the corner..I don't really understand the whole block and tackle thing and how it makes it easier...I set it up that way on the advice of a guy I know and it seems to work well..but it is sorta slow cause the winch is a cheapo.

I bought one just like that. My car weighs 2500 and I haven't had any trouble with it.

When you double the line through a snatchblock, you double the pull, but you cut the line speed in 1/2.

Is it because the line is on both sides of the block...sorta acting as two seperate cables? If so I think I get that...never gave it much thought actually. :?

Yes sir, that is the reason. :)
