Two weekends ago at the Charlotte Roval, he pulled down pit road for the last time, dejected that he was bumped from the Round of 8. Just a few short hours later, he found himself back in contention after fellow playoff driver Alex Bowman was disqualified due to a too-light race car. One week later, he pulled off the track (after a lengthy burnout) and found himself headed to victory lane, securing himself a chance to win his third championship, which would be a record among active full-time drivers.

I hesitate to use the word “lucky” when describing events like last weekend’s playoff race. It’s incredibly difficult to win a Cup race, and you have to position yourself to be ready to take advantage of certain situations. Few would argue that Logano had a dominant car at Las Vegas. That distinction would go to Christopher Bell or, perhaps earlier in the race, Tyler Reddick, who won Stage 1 before colliding with fellow playoff driver Chase Elliott and tumbling across the tri-oval.

Aside from this accident, the race was relatively clean, although pit road miscues for playoff drivers such as Kyle Larson and Denny Hamlin proved costly. Late-race green-flag pit strategy would not favor Bell, who managed to charge ahead on fresh tires in the waning laps, but never found himself within striking distance of Logano. The resulting playoff picture has Bell looking good, but other drivers, such as Elliott and Hamlin, have work to do heading into this weekend’s race at Homestead-Miami Speedway.

Logano wasn’t the only surprise winner this week, however. To NASCAR historians, the case of Bobby Allison‘s 1971 win at Bowman Gray Stadium has been a point of contention for decades. It was one of a handful of unusual 1971 races that combined the Grand National (Cup) cars and the smaller, ponycar-based Grand American cars at short tracks. While Allison typically ran the Grand National cars, he competed in this particular race in a Mustang. He beat Richard Petty, who led the first half in a Grand National Plymouth before pitting – something Allison didn’t have to do in his smaller, lighter, less powerful car. Allison was awarded the trophy and the prize money, but NASCAR made the unusual decision to record no real winner in the history books.

That changed this week, as NASCAR finally awarded the 86-year-old Allison his 85th NASCAR Cup victory. This grants him sole ownership of the #4 spot on the all-time wins list, a spot he shared previously with Darrel Waltrip. This was a controversy that was brought up on social media during NASCAR’s 75th anniversary celebration last year, and folks are happy to see that the history books have been corrected.

Photo: Getty Images

{"_jetpack_memberships_contains_paid_content":false
[3470
127
post-98290","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-news","tag-nascar
["GET
