The drag racing world lost a legend in December with the passing of Don Schumacher. Now, the NHRA has announced that it will honor his life and contributions to the sport and community with a Celebration of life at at his home track, Route 66 Raceway in Chicago, on Friday, May 17 during the Gerber Collision & Glass NHRA Route 66 Nationals presented by PEAK Performance.<\/p>\n

Schumacher was both racer, team owner and force of nature. He was responsible for 367 NHRA event wins (including five personal Funny Car wins), 19 world championships not to mention receiving the NHRA\u2019s Lifetime Achievement Award in 2022 and induction into the International Motorsports Hall of Fame in 2013. Numerous drivers rose to fame and prominence under his purview.<\/p>\n

The NHRA will recognize the legacy with a display tent at the track before the first round of qualifying during the Chicago event. There will also be an autograph session with past and present DSR drivers, including a special Don Schumacher hero card.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe couldn\u2019t think of a better way or a better location to celebrate Don than to recognize him at our family\u2019s home track surrounded by racers and fans,\u201d said Megan Schumacher, President of Don Schumacher Racing. \u201cThe outpouring of support we received when he passed in December was absolutely incredible. Celebrating Don\u2019s contributions to our beloved sport with a hometown crowd will be the perfect way to commemorate his tremendous racing career.\u201d<\/p>\n

Fans will also have the opportunity to make donations to the MD Anderson Cancer Center for a chance to win memorabilia.<\/p>\n
