Jimmie Johnson is mourning the deaths of his in-laws and wife Chandra’s nephew – NASCAR photo<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

As NASCAR prepares for its first street-course race in the Windy City this weekend, Chicago fans will have to be content to watch without seeing seven-time NASCAR Cup Series champion Jimmie Johnson and his Legacy Motor Club No. 84 Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 in this Grant Park 220 race.<\/p>\n

Three of Johnson\u2019s wife Chandra\u2019s relatives were shot to death in what police in Muskogee, Oklahoma, believe might be a murder\/suicide. Terry, Jack and Dalton Janway were found at their home after police responded to a 911 call about an individual with a gun. When they arrived at the Janway home, they found a body inside the front door and heard gunshots inside the home. Terry and Jack are Chandra Johnson\u2019s parents; Dalton is Chandra\u2019s nephew and the Janway\u2019s 11-year-old grandson.<\/p>\n

NASCAR made a statement upon learning of this horror to a long-standing community member: \u201cWe are saddened by the tragic deaths of members of Johnson\u2019s family. The entire NASCAR family extends its deepest support and condolences during this difficult time to Chandra, Jimmie and the entire Johnson and Janway families.\u201d<\/p>\n

Legacy Motor Club, which has full-time entries for Erik Jones and Noah Gragson, who will compete in this weekend\u2019s race stated: \u201cLegacy Motor Club has elected to withdraw the No. 84 Carvana Chevrolet from this weekend\u2019s NASCAR Cup Series event in Chicago. The Johnson family has asked for privacy at this time and no further statements will be made.\u201d<\/p>\n

Johnson was slated to compete in his fourth race of the season at Chicago. He is an 83-time NASCAR Cup Series winner and returned to Cup Series competition on a part-time basis for the 2023 season. He has raced at the 2023 Daytona 500, in the Cup Series race on Circuit of the Americas’ road course and in the Coca-Cola 600 at Charlotte Motor Speedway.<\/p>\n
