If you’ve bought aftermarket auto parts online or from a catalog (or in person if you live in central Ohio) in the last 50 years, odds are that you’ve bought something from JEGS<\/a><\/strong><\/em>. This week, it was announced that the family owned business had sold the majority share to Greenbriar Equity Group, a middle-market private equity firm. The acquisition capital will help the business grow and expand it’s offerings.<\/p>\n

Founded by the Coughlin Family in 1960, the aftermarket distributor has been a household name for enthusiasts for most of it’s existence. What began as a performance shop and parts store in Columbus, OH grew to become a huge distributor of high performance aftermarket parts for auto enthusiasts. Jeg Coughlin, the founder, became the go-to guy for souping up hot rod engines, and getting THE part to perfect a passion project.<\/p>\n

The business stayed in the family, operated by Coughlin’s four sons, and grew into a mail order behemoth that would foreshadow the online retail business.\u00a0 The business continued to expand — first to a larger 10,000 foot space that would eventually become the retail store, and then adding on a massive warehouse and central headquarters — JEGS continued to be true enthusiasts, fielding drag racing teams and bringing home NHRA championships along with starting a foundation to support cancer research.<\/p>\n

While the company has continued to expand, it remained a family endeavor both in ownership and in attitude, employing over 350 people. Now, with its acquisition by Greenbriar, the company will be able to grow and expand its eCommerce offerings.<\/p>\n
