The news following Sunday\u2019s Dodge NHRA Nationals, held on the Lucas Oil Raceway dragstrip wasn\u2019t dominated by winners and losers.<\/p>\n

Rather, an accident that occurred late Sunday night has taken the joy out of Steve Torrence, Ron Capps, Jeg Coughlin Jr. and Angelle Sampey\u2019s victories in the third \u201creturn to racing\u201d competition at the track outside Indianapolis, site of next month\u2019s DENSO Spark Plugs U.S. Nationals.<\/p>\n

While the details aren\u2019t known completely, Dom Lagana, 34, Top Fuel competitor and mechanic on the CAPCO Contractors dragster of Billy Torrence, was driving Richie Crampton\u2019s 1957 Chevrolet wagon, known as the \u201cSh*tbox of Doom\u201d southbound on County Road 1000E when he lost control and struck a utility pole.<\/p>\n

Top Fuel race winner Crampton and fellow CAPCO Contractors mechanic Jacob Sanders, 30, were passengers in the Chevy, which had been used as Jonnie Lindberg\u2019s Top Alcohol Funny Car tow vehicle this past weekend.<\/p>\n

Hendricks County Sheriff\u2019s captain Amanda Goings said the accident occurred just past 11 PM near Brownsburg. The vehicle veered off the west side of the roadway and struck a utility pole; Lagana suffered life-threatening injuries in the accident; Crampton and Sanders had non-life-threatening injuries. All were transported to local Indianapolis hospitals.<\/p>\n

The accident site is about two miles from Lucas Oil Raceway but Goings indicated, \u201cWe don\u2019t know where they were coming from when this accident happened. It\u2019s still early in the investigation to tell where they were coming from, whether they left the track or left somewhere else. We just don\u2019t know yet.\u201d<\/p>\n

The \u201957 Chevy did not have seat belts. Although unconfirmed, sources say Crampton was ejected and suffered a broken hip. Lagana is currently on a ventilator and is listed in critical condition. Sanders\u2019 condition is unknown at this time. Crampton, 40, had been scheduled to drive Lindberg\u2019s Funny Car at the U.S. Nationals next month.<\/p>\n

Steve Torrence, reigning Top Fuel champion and winner of this past weekend\u2019s race, posted to social media on Monday afternoon: \u201cWe are asking everyone to please pray for my brother Dom Laguna. He and two others were in an awful car accident last night and is currently in critical condition. Please pray for healing as well as peace and comfort for our family.\u201d<\/p>\n
