You never know when you\u2019re going to need compressed air to inflate tires, run a rattle gun, or\u00a0save yourself from\u00a0some backbreaking work. We enjoy having a compact compressor and a\u00a0small tank mounted underneath our Ford F-250\u00a0pick-up. \u00a0It\u00a0takes up no bed or cabin space, and\u00a0it\u00a0is always with us.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">The <a href=\"http:\/\/www.viaircorp.com\/oba-constant.html\">VIAIR Constant Duty On Board Air system<\/a>\u00a0seemed a good fit for the task. Their OBA (On Board Air) systems have been used in\u00a0many automotive applications such as: inflating air bags, blowing train horns, powering air lockers and actuating pneumatic cylinders, and are available in 12 volt, 24 volt, portable, hard-mount and compressors rated up to 200PSI.\u00a0The model selected has a 100% duty cycle on the compressor, 2.5 gallon tank, a comprehensive set of fasteners, air lines, and is a universal, which provided us with\u00a0the flexibility to install anywhere on the vehicle .<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><span style=\"line-height: 1.5em;\"><span style=\"line-height: 1.5em;\">After mounting all the fittings to the tank, the first task to be undertaken was finding a mounting location. The obvious position was on our truck was the frame, but the system can be installed anywhere it will fit. We wanted to preserve cabin and bed space in our pickup, so we wanted to mount the OBA on the frame rails. As our F250 has factory &#8220;upfitter&#8221; switches, we used those instead of VIAIR dash panel switch and\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"line-height: 1.5em;\">gauge<\/span><span style=\"line-height: 1.5em;\">\u00a0provided.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">The air tank\u00a0has\u00a0six \u00bc\u201d NPT Ports tapped into the top and bottom side of the tank. \u00a0The tank\u2019s mounting bracket is located at the bottom of the air tank as\u00a0well. \u00a0So we\u00a0fabricated some mounts that\u00a0clamp to the frame rails and\u00a0allow us\u00a0keep\u00a0the\u00a0air\u00a0tank right side up. This way we\u00a0can still use the provided\u00a0\u00bc\u201d port to expel\u00a0moisture.\u00a0We were able to use some parts leftover from a previous project\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.racingjunk.com\/news\/2014\/06\/04\/installing-rear-airbags-on-your-pickup\/\">installing airbags<\/a>, and we hand bent the loops that would wrap around the tank by The pressure switch ensures it should stay between 110psi and 145psi &#8211; as long as we don&#8217;t drain it excessively, there is also a safety valve included in case the switch fails.<\/p>\n<p id=\"docs-internal-guid-184bb927-ba52-5786-9529-a05d13b8e746\" dir=\"ltr\">The system seems to produce enough air to do up eight lug nuts on our truck (at which point the tank is exhausted), and can inflate our 35&#8243; tires not much slower than our shop compressor.
