zMAX Dragway lit up in race country this weekend with the powerful machines of the National Hot Rod Association (NHRA). One of the most popular races in the area didn\u2019t disappoint, as one victor took down a points-leader as well as an eight-time season champion to pick up his first Wally of the 2017 season, while another claimed\u00a0his second Funny Car victory of the season.<\/p>\n

Top Fuel
\n<\/strong><\/p>\n

\"Torrence,<\/p>\n

Much like the Top Fuel final round at the SpringNationals<\/a>, Steve Torrence would once again have to take on points leader Leah Pritchett in the final round at this weekend\u2019s four-wide nationals. Although Pritchett would put up a fight in her Don Schumacher Racing Papa John\u2019s dragster, Torrence\u2019s Capco Contractors dragster would prove to be the more dominant machine\u00a0as he took down his former rival with a 3.783-second pass at 323.89 MPH for the ninth victory of his career and first of the season.<\/p>\n

Along with defeating Pritchett, Torrence would have to defeat eight-time season champion Tony Schumacher and Terry McMillen before racing in Sunday\u2019s final round.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis is a driver\u2019s race,\u201d said Torrence. \u201cWe compete in 24 races a year and one of them we race four-wide. It\u2019s completely different when you come in here; you are mentally challenged.\u201d<\/p>\n

Funny Car<\/strong><\/p>\n

\"Torrence,<\/p>\n

While\u00a0Sunday\u2019s Top Fuel winner picked up his first victory of the 2017 season, the Funny Car Series winner would find his way back to victory lane for the second week in a row. Following his recent win at the NHRA SpringNationals, the current Funny Car world champion proved that his previous winless streak is over after a 3.933-second pass at 322.65 MPH in his NAPA Auto Parts Dodge Charger. He beat out Don Schumacher Racing teammates Jack Beckman and Matt Hagan as well as Kalitta Motorsports Funny Car driver J.R. Todd.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis is a fun race,\u201d said Capps. \u201cTo be in a car and to have it throw you back with so much g-force and thinking \u2018How on God\u2019s earth are these two Goodyear\u2019s (tires) sticking to that ground?’ It\u2019s an amazing feeling!\u201d<\/p>\n

With the victory, Capps takes a 43-point lead over his teammate Hagan.<\/p>\n

Pro Stock<\/strong><\/p>\n

\"Torrence,<\/p>\n

The Pro Stock Series would give another follow-up victor his first win at the famed four-wide dragway. \u00a0Harlow Sammons Racing\u2019s own Chris McGaha raced his way to his fifth career victory after running a 6.591-second pass at 210.44 MPH in his powerful Chevy Camaro. This pass would take down Greg Anderson, Shane Gray and Drew Skillman in the final round.<\/p>\n

\u201cNow it looks like we\u2019ve got some momentum and it\u2019s kind of hard to swallow,\u201d said McGaha. \u201cTo me, I have always said that you have to have power to win in this game. This one showed us that we have a lot of power and that\u2019s why we came here.\u201d<\/p>\n
