NASCAR drivers in both the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series as well as the Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series headed to the East Coast this weekend for the first short track race of the 2017 season. Once again, the paper clip in Ridgeway, VA proved a challenge for its competitors.<\/p>\n

Alpha Energy Solutions 250<\/h3>\n

After picking up the pole for Saturday\u2019s Alpha Energy Solutions 250 next generation driver Chase Elliott held off 2016 NASCAR Camping World Truck Series champion Johnny Sauter for his first short-track win of the season.<\/p>\n

Elliott would prove that he was the driver to beat following the drop of the green flag in Saturday\u2019s race. Despite winning the first stage of this 250-lap race, Elliott would continue to have his challenges from competitors like Kyle Busch Motorsports driver Christopher Bell, who led a race-high 96 laps, as well as the driver who wouldn\u2019t let Elliott\u2019s win be an easy one \u2013 Johnny Sauter, who also won Stage 2 of this race.<\/p>\n

Despite each challenge thrown his way, Chase Elliott took his final lead from third-place finisher Christopher Bell on Lap 234 when Bell\u2019s Toyota tangled with Austin Cindric’s Ford in Turns 1 and 2. Bell lost the top spot, and Sauter charged past into the second position before NASCAR threw the 10th and final caution of the race.<\/p>\n

As the laps wound down it appeared that Elliott would easily take the checkers along with the famous grandfather clock, but his most pivotal move would come on Lap 239, when the young gun would block the veteran\u2019s crossover move in Turn 3 to keep the lead and pick up the win.<\/p>\n

“It was fun today,” Elliott said. “I had some help there with Christopher’s misfortune. I was trying all that I could to get by him. He was doing a really good job of maintaining my bumper. I also saw Johnny coming in my mirror with a big run, and I knew that I had to block him. Fortunately, it all worked out.\u201d<\/p>\n

As the sun began to shine on the paper clip for Sunday\u2019s STP 500, the 70-year-old track seemed to come to life with history and fanfare. Ford board member and namesake Edsel Ford II would kick things off in the Martinsville Speedway pace car followed by the No. 42 of Kyle Larson, who would lead the 38-car field to the drop of the green flag after rain showers would wash out Friday\u2019s qualifying session. Despite starting from the pole, Larson wouldn\u2019t have the ability to follow-up his prior week\u2019s winning streak at the famed half-mile short track<\/p>\n

Instead, the No. 78 of Martin Truex, Jr. would find his way to the lead as well as a Stage 1 win. Although Truex\u2019s Toyota Camry seemed like a strong contender at Sunday\u2019s race, history began to take over as the laps wound down in this 500-lap race. In fact, the conclusion of Stage 2 saw the history made on Saturday repeating itself as the No. 24 of Chase Elliott would once again return to his winning ways. Following the conclusion of Stage 2 the famed Virginia paperclip beast would live up to the hype as drivers like Daniel Suarez, Kurt Busch, Eric Almirola, Denny Hamlin, Danica Patrick and Dale Earnhardt, Jr. would all finish this race with torn up race vehicles.<\/p>\n

Despite the continued chaos, the No. 2 of Brad Keselowski and 18 of 2016 race winner Kyle Busch would swap the lead during the final 64-laps of this race. While Busch would take the lead on lap 444 of 500, Keselowski would take over on lap 458 to pick up the win by 1.806 seconds over Busch to take Ford back to the Winner\u2019s Circle at Martinsville Speedway for the first time in 15 years.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis track is 70-years-old and a lot of legends have won here. It feels great to be able to join them and bring home a (grandfather) clock (trophy),\u201d said Keselowski. \u201cA lot of people don’t know this, but those clocks are built in my hometown in Rochester Hills, Michigan, so it’s cool to get one of them from back home. I have one as a truck owner, but not as a driver, so I\u2019m glad to bring one back as a driver. I don’t like to keep trophies at my house, but this one’s going to my house. That’s how special it is.”<\/p>\n

A once again disappointed Kyle Busch came home runner-up. \u201cAll we did was put four tires on it, and it went to junk,\u201d said Busch. \u201cI hate it for our guys. They’ve deserved all year much better finishes than what we’ve been able to produce, and here’s another one today. Just a frustrating season so far, but we give it everything we got. We do all we can with what we\u2019re given at the particular time and try to execute and do a good job.\u201d<\/p>\n

The victory was Keselowski\u2019s 23rd in the Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series, and it vaulted him into the playoff points lead. In the series standings, Keselowski leaves Martinsville in fourth place, 34 points behind leader Kyle Larson and 30 behind second-place Chase Elliott, who parlayed a front-row starting position into a third-place finish.
