Rookie driver Alexander Rossi earned $2.54 million as he crossed the finish line on fumes to win the 100th Indianapolis 500 at Indianapolis Motor Speedway on Sunday May 29, 2016.<\/p>\n

Rossi, who was also named the Sunoco Rookie of the Year, took a risk in his No. 98 NAPA Auto Parts\/Curb Honda for Andretti Herta Autosport with Curb-Agajanian, beating teammate Carlos Munoz by 4.4975 seconds, and became the first rookie since Helio Castroneves in 2001 to win Indy.<\/p>\n

The historic race was favored to go to defending champ Juan Pablo Montoya, but a crash in Lap 64 put him out of the race.<\/p>\n

In a close race, Rossi was followed by Munoz, Josef Newgarden, Tony Kanaan, and Charlie Kimball to round out the top 5.<\/p>\n
