{"id":14585,"date":"2015-04-29T14:40:06","date_gmt":"2015-04-29T21:40:06","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.racingjunk.com\/news\/?p=14585"},"modified":"2015-04-30T11:54:28","modified_gmt":"2015-04-30T18:54:28","slug":"nascar-investigates-safety-issues","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.racingjunk.com\/news\/nascar-investigates-safety-issues\/","title":{"rendered":"NASCAR Investigates Safety Issues"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><center><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/iWhzJXlTjbo?autoplay=1\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/center>NASCAR is once again taking another look at the safety of pit crew members following a fire that ignited in the pit stall of NASCAR XFINITY driver Brendan Gaughan during last weekend&#8217;s Toyota Care 250.<\/p>\n<p>Thought to have been caused by a problem with the fuel filler can&#8217;s coupler not sealing properly when Gaughan&#8217;s gasman pulled the can out of the car, fuel was sprayed on both the car itself as well as around other crew members as they came around to the left side of the car.\u00a0 When the team&#8217;s rear tire changer attempted to tighten the lug nuts on the left rear wheel, a spark from one of these lug nuts ignited the fuel that had leaked onto the ground starting the pit road fire.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" data-attachment-id=\"14587\" data-permalink=\"https:\/\/www.racingjunk.com\/news\/nascar-investigates-safety-issues\/crewman-injured\/\" data-orig-file=\"https:\/\/www.racingjunk.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/04\/crewman-injured.jpg\" data-orig-size=\"1296,1296\" data-comments-opened=\"1\" data-image-meta=\"{&quot;aperture&quot;:&quot;0&quot;,&quot;credit&quot;:&quot;&quot;,&quot;camera&quot;:&quot;&quot;,&quot;caption&quot;:&quot;&quot;,&quot;created_timestamp&quot;:&quot;0&quot;,&quot;copyright&quot;:&quot;&quot;,&quot;focal_length&quot;:&quot;0&quot;,&quot;iso&quot;:&quot;0&quot;,&quot;shutter_speed&quot;:&quot;0&quot;,&quot;title&quot;:&quot;&quot;,&quot;orientation&quot;:&quot;0&quot;}\" data-image-title=\"crewman injured\" data-image-description=\"\" data-image-caption=\"\" data-medium-file=\"https:\/\/www.racingjunk.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/04\/crewman-injured-300x300.jpg\" data-large-file=\"https:\/\/www.racingjunk.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/04\/crewman-injured-1024x1024.jpg\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-14587\" src=\"http:\/\/www.racingjunk.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/04\/crewman-injured-300x300.jpg\" alt=\"crewman injured\" width=\"300\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.racingjunk.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/04\/crewman-injured-300x300.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.racingjunk.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/04\/crewman-injured-150x150.jpg 150w, https:\/\/www.racingjunk.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/04\/crewman-injured-1024x1024.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.racingjunk.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/04\/crewman-injured.jpg 1296w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/>Although two Richard Childress Racing pit crew members as well as a crew member from Eric McClure&#8217;s neighboring team all received minor injuries and were transported to a local hospital, thanks to the current mandated fire suits and other safety equipment both team members have now been released from the hospital and weren&#8217;t seriously injured.<\/p>\n<p>NASCAR Vice President of Innovation and Racing Development Gene Stefanyshyn also said that he was impressed with how quickly the entire NASCAR and fire safety crew jumped into action to not only put out this fire but get everyone to safety.\u00a0 \u201cHad everyone not jumped into action so quickly the consequences could have been much more dire than they were,\u201d said Stefanyshyn.<\/p>\n<p>As is common place for both the sport as well as for NASCAR, this incident will now go under the microscope to find new ways to avoid incidents like this from reoccurring as well as to avoid further injuries.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The next step for us will be to do an analysis of the situation,&#8221; said\u00a0 Stefanyshyn.\u00a0\u00a0 &#8220;What was the cause?
