He beat Tony Stewart Racing\u2019s Matt Hagan\u2019s Dodge Charger SRT Hellcat in the final round. In Pro Stock, reigning KB Titan Racing champion Dallas Glenn earned both the race win he\u2019d been hungering for and regular season crown in the finals against Elite Motorsports\u2019 Jeg Coughlin, who said \u201cIt\u2019s been a day\u2026 \u201c since he last ran in a final round. Pro Stock Motorcycle turned out to be an all-Smith final, with Matt beating Angie on their similar Buell bikes.<\/p>\n<p>But there was so much more to this long and challenging event, held in two days of deadening heat and two days of doable weather. There was only a slight Saturday lapse of competition for rain sprinkles, which is an anomaly in Indy during race week. If you\u2019re a drag racer, this is where you must be on Labor Day. If you\u2019re an oval racer, May&#8217;s Indianapolis 500 is your holy grail.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>For that reason, who raced on Monday was just as relevant as who did not.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>In Top Fuel eight racers didn\u2019t make the show, including eight-time champion Tony Schumacher, along with Dan Mercier, rookie Jake Sanders, Krista Baldwin, Lex Joon and Jacob Opatmy. After five rounds of qualifying from Friday night through Sunday afternoon, sevenFunny Car racers faced disappointment: Bobby Bode\u2019s Ford Mustang, Chris King\u2019s Charger, Blake Alexander in his GR Supra, the Chargers of Dylan Winefsky and Justin Schriefer, Dave Richards and Terry Haddock in their Mustangs. After a single qualifying session Friday night, in two classes one could surmise who\u2019d be getting diamond Wally winner\u2019s trophies on Monday, as Langdon and Matt Smith both opened the weekend with No. 1 qualifying runs. The Challenge pits semifinalists from the previous event against one another. The Pro Stock round was especially exciting, seeing rookie Cody Anderson take the race win while his father, six-time Pro Stock titleholder Greg Anderson claimed the championship.<\/p>\n<p>Sunday\u2019s PlayNHRA Funny Car All-Star Callout found Beckman, the 2012 Funny Car titleholder &#8211; then with Don Schumacher Racing &#8211; earning that title, then adding to his race weekend glory with the race title as well. To reach that final round, Beckman defeated Chad Green\u2019s Mustang, J.R. Todd\u2019s Supra and then met and defeated Matt Hagan, who got to the finals by beating Spencer Hyde\u2019s Mustang and Alexis DeJoria\u2019s Chevy. The first round saw Langdon defeat Clay Millican, ending Rick Ware Racing\u2019s week prematurely, while Stewart took out Chicago\u2019s T.J. Zizzo; Beckman defeated Jeff Arend in Jim Dunn\u2019s Charger; Glenn beat Mason McGaha while Matt Smith dispensed with Chris Bostick\u2019s Suzuki. In the quarters, Langdon defeated Justin Ashley, Beckman dispensed with Paul Lee, who ran a Mongoose tribute to Tom McEwen (\u201cHe was always my favorite\u201d), Glenn defeated a strong Matt Latino, also from the KB Titan stables, while Matt Smith fought Clayton Howey\u2019s Suzuki. The semifinal round pitted Langdon against Pruett and Stewart against Doug Kalitta, while Funny Car saw Hagan defeat Capps and Beckman dispense with Prock. He probably should have sat that one out, having had surgery for gall bladder issues. Smith admitted to being about 50% in Sonoma and claims to be about 85-90% now. His four-Buell Matt Smith Racing team did some testing a couple of weeks ago at Rockingham Dragstrip in high-heat conditions, so they were prepared for what they found in Indy. \u201cWe worked really hard to get back to here,\u201d he said after defeating Angie in the final round. \u201cWe\u2019ve done a lot of testing at Rockingham in these conditions: hot, humid.
