While he and his team may have controlled the second half of the race, a late caution meant that he’d have to hold off a surging Denny Hamlin to secure his victory.

A push from teammate Alex Bowman off of Turn 2 gave Elliott the edge over Hamlin, winning by a margin of just four tenths of a second. In a season where Toyotas seem dominant, it’s got to be exciting for Chevrolet fans to see one driver separate himself from the crowd of languishing Camaros.

Elliott currently sits third in overall points, just eight points behind Hamlin. However, Tyler Reddick, with his five wins – and a strong fourth-place finish on Sunday – sits at 526 points on the year, a whopping 108 points ahead of Hamlin.

This weekend, the series heads to historic Watkins Glen, New York for one of our favorite road course races of the season. Elliott and Reddick are renowned as road course acea at this point in their careers, but don’t forget that Denny Hamlin scored the pole at the Glen in 2023, finishing second to William Byron.

One surprise last Sunday was Corey Heim, who led 69 laps compared to Elliott’s 87. Unfortunately, it was his spin that brought out the final caution of the day. Heim would finish 31st.

Speaking of disappointments, Kyle Busch looked poised to finish in the top 10 before tangling with John Hunter Nemechek, seeming to wreck him intentionally. We’ve gotten a kinder, gentler Kyle Busch these past few seasons. After countless disappointing runs in his Richard Childress Racing Chevrolet, it seems that he’s close to boiling over.

For better or for worse, could we be witnessing the return of the “old” Kyle Busch? So long as his results improve, we’re sure his fans will be happy. It does seem that he’s been running a bit better lately.

Busch is another driver who is not often thought of as a road course ace. However, back in 2015, he triumphed at Sonoma to make his way into the playoffs after being sidelined by a serious injury at Daytona. He would eventually win that year’s championship. Will Kyle rally to a great finish at Watkins Glen in a similarly triumphant fashion, or will Nemechek exact his revenge?

Photo: NASCAR

Elliott holds on to beat Denny Hamlin and become the season’s second multi-race winner.

{"_jetpack_memberships_contains_paid_content":false
[3424,3470
127
post-105905","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-nascar","category-news","tag-nascar

https://www.racingjunk.com/news/wp-content/uploads/2026/05/2026-may3-elliott-texas-gallery-2-e1778257857251.jpg
["GET
