A little over two decades later, it’s clear that one of these rules has worked out better than the other.

Back in the good old days, it wasn’t uncommon for cars to race back to the yellow flag. This was especially true for cars who found themselves a lap or more down from the leaders. Racing back to the yellow offered a chance to gain back a precious lap, at the expense of safety. Emergency crews had to wait until all cars on track had slowed down to render aid, and the cars racing back to the yellow ran the risk of getting tangled up with stranded cars.

Things came to a head on September 14, 2003, at the Sylvania 300 at New Hampshire International Speedway. On lap 161, Dale Jarrett spun in turn 4, contacting the wall and causing a caution. Despite the smoking wreck of Jarrett’s car sitting in the middle of the front stretch, several cars charged full steam ahead, attempting to gain a lap back. Casey Mears avoided a nasty collision with Jarrett’s stricken Ford Taurus by the narrowest of margins.

NASCAR reacted quickly, instituting a new rule for the following weekend at Dover. Now known colloquially as the “lucky dog” rule, the field is frozen the moment the caution flag is thrown, and a lap is awarded back to the first car a lap (or more) down, assuming they weren’t involved in the incident that caused the caution in the first place. Officially, NASCAR calls it a “free pass,” but thanks to an initial sponsorship by Aaron’s, the “lucky dog” name has stuck. Thanks to iRacing’s usage of the term, “lucky dog” remains the preferred nomenclature for a generation of up-and-coming racers who weren’t even alive in 2003.

The result of the rule change has paid dividends for driver safety. Safety crews reach wrecked cars in seconds, and down-on-their-luck drivers don’t have to risk life and limb to get back into contention anymore. It’s a win-win for everyone involved, including the fans watching at home. I’ve been pretty harsh on NASCAR’s early 2000s rule changes as of late, but I wanted to take this opportunity to applaud them for getting something right. Long live the lucky dog!

Photo: Logan Riely/Getty Images

Not all of NASCAR’s 21st century changes have been well received, but this is a case in which they got things right.

{"_jetpack_memberships_contains_paid_content":false
[3424,3470
127,4970
post-103460","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-nascar","category-news","tag-nascar","tag-rules
["GET
