Bobby Allen—or, as many call him, “Scruffy”—passed away at the age of 81, leaving behind a legacy full of great memories that spans generations of racers and fans alike.

Originally from Florida, Allen began his racing journey in the Sunshine State before relocating further north to Pennsylvania in search of greater opportunities. The road wasn’t easy—he famously spent nights sleeping in the Lincoln Speedway ticket booth—but perseverance and raw talent quickly set him apart. By 1975, Allen had become one of the region’s top competitors, claiming victory at the 13th running of Williams Grove Speedway’s prestigious National Open.

When Ted Johnson started the World of Outlaws NOS Energy Drink Sprint Car Series in 1978, Allen was one of its founding members. True to his scrappy nickname, “Scruffy” captured the second win in World of Outlaws history at Eldora Speedway, followed by another victory at Indiana’s Warsaw Speedway. He finished third in the inaugural championship standings that same year, cementing his place among the sport’s elite.

Throughout the 1980s, Allen continued to collect checkered flags across the country. His career highlights include the 1980 All Star Circuit of Champions title, multiple Tuscarora 50 wins (1982 and 1989), and his most celebrated triumph—the 1990 Knoxville Nationals, where he outdueled Sammy Swindell to claim his 30th and final World of Outlaws victory.

Inducted into the National Sprint Car Hall of Fame in 1988, Allen’s contributions went far beyond his own success behind the wheel. He mentored and inspired future generations, including his son, Jacob Allen, and grandson, Logan Schuchart. Together, they built Shark Racing, which joined the World of Outlaws tour full-time in 2014. Despite skepticism about whether the small, family-run team could endure the grind of a national schedule, they not only made it through their debut season—they thrived.

Logan Schuchart earned Shark Racing’s first Outlaws victory in 2016 at Cedar Lake Speedway, going on to collect 44 victories to date, good for 20th all-time. Jacob Allen joined not only his father but also his cousin in the record books with his first Series win in 2020, adding four more in 2022. The team continues to compete with Schuchart in the No. 1S and Ashton Torgerson now driving the No. 1A, with Jacob’s continued involvement.

Allen remained a constant presence with his team, attending events and offering guidance right up through his final weekend at Williams Grove Speedway’s National Open.

World Racing Group CEO Brian Carter reflected, “Bobby Allen embodied what it meant to be a World of Outlaws racer. The same drive that took him to a Knoxville Nationals victory is what he poured into building Shark Racing with his family. His passion, experience, and character meant so much to the sport and everyone in it. He will be deeply missed.”

In a heartfelt statement, Shark Racing shared:

“Our hearts are broken but we know he lived his life to the fullest and touched so many. Anyone who ever got to meet him always got to share a story or a smile. He did it his way—the ‘Scruffy way.’ He will be loved and terribly missed by all.”

Bobby Allen’s story is one of grit, family, and perseverance—the qualities that define grassroots racing. From sleeping in a ticket booth to standing atop the Knoxville Nationals podium, he proved that passion and heart could take you anywhere. His impact on sprint car racing, and on those who continue his legacy, will endure for generations to come.

The dirt and sprint car community is mourning the loss of one of its most respected and influential figures.
