He started stripping to make ends meet.

When it comes to the trades and their tools, only electricians rival mechanics when it comes to obsessing over their equipment. Mechanics swear by tool truck brands like Snap-On and Cornwell, and electricians have their own beloved specialty brands. Klein Tools, founded in 1857, is at the top of the list for electricians.

While most automotive enthusiasts dread electrical work, the right tools can make an unpleasant job that much easier. Take, for example, these Klein Katapult wire strippers. They’re about as easy to use as a bottle opener, and they can strip wire from 20 gauge all the way down to 8 gauge. Just insert your wire, squeeze the handles together, and you’re done. It’s a pretty clever little mechanism that grabs the wire, holds it in place, strips the insulation, and removes the insulation all at once. In my experience, it’s worked flawlessly every time, even when I was in a hurry or not as careful as I normally am with tedious electrical work.

The tool does a lot, but it’s relatively compact, meaning you can still easily use it underneath a dashboard or inside a crowded engine bay with little to no fuss. The handles are robust, but only exactly as large as they need to be. All in all, it’s a very well-engineered tool, like almost all of Klein’s lineup. Klein even sells replacement parts for the Katapult should your cutting edges become dull over time. Mine are still going strong.

As someone who uses Klein tools every day at my day job, I can vouch for the fact that Klein seems to put serious effort into making sure that their tools are ruggedly built, easy to use, comfortable, and above all else, functional. Klein manufactures almost all of their hand tools in the United States. That includes their screwdrivers, which are among the most inexpensive USA-made screwdrivers you can buy. Unfortunately, the Katapult is a rare exception to the rule. While the quality of tool definitely lives up to the Klein name, the Katapult does lose a point for being manufactured overseas, since their basic wire strippers (also an excellent tool, I might add) are both cheaper and manufactured here in the USA.

Overall, for around $30, you can’t go wrong with this tool. If you do a lot of electrical work on your race car, you’ll be glad you have it. If you dread electrical work, you’ll be even happier to have this in your toolbox.

Klein Katapult Wire Stripper and Cutter

Price: ★★★★★

Quality: ★★★★

Features: ★★★★★

Function: ★★★★

Overall: ★★★★

Photo: Cam VanDerHorst

This combination wire stripper and cutter makes quick work of electrical repairs on your race car.

{"_jetpack_memberships_contains_paid_content":false
[3470
12430,12270,55
post-101937","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-news","tag-klein-katapult-wire-strippers","tag-tool-review","tag-tools
["GET
