As the racing season begins to wind to a close, champions are being crowned throughout the country. As the World of Outlaws Craftsman Late Model Series wrapped up its 30th Anniversary tour on Saturday night at the Dirt Track at Charlotte in the World of Outlaws World Finals one Tennessee driver officially clinched his very first World of Outlaws championship, while two other drivers would earn hard-fought wins that they are not soon to forget.
While “The Rocket” Brandon Sheppard did what he could to earn his first championship this weekend, after wracking up his 13th win on Friday night/Saturday afternoon, a third-place finish for Mike Marlar would catapult the points leader into a knock down drag out fight for the 2018 World of Outlaws Craftsman Late Model Series championship on Saturday night.
As the engines fired up for the final 50-Lap race of the current World of Outlaws Craftsman Late Model Series season, the No. 1P of Earl Pearson led the 28-car field to the wave of the green flag. Despite starting fourth, the Reece Monument Co. No. 0 of Scott Bloomquist quickly charged to the lead and was virtually unchallenged throughout the entire feature for his first win since February.
Despite his $12,000 win, the 2004 World of Outlaws Late Model champion never had a shot at this year’s championship. Instead, this battle was reserved for either “The Rocket” Brandon Sheppard or “The Winfield Warrior” Mike Marlar. While both drivers put up one heck of a battle, of which Sheppard would come out on top with a third-place finish in Saturday night’s feature, Marlar’s going into this race with a wide points margin and a sixth-place finish would give this hard-charging Tennessee warrior his first World of Outlaws Craftsman Late Model Series championship.
“First off, running with the World of Outlaws this season has been a real pleasure,” said Marlar. “Win, lose or draw, it has been great season and I am honored to be named the 2018 champion.
