Shelby Will Finally Start Producing 1967 GT500 Super Snakes

“Better late than never” is quite an understatement with this news. Shelby will be building a very limited run of 1967 Shelby GT500 Super Snakes. During the 1960s, Shelby produced a demonstration Mustang for Goodyear powered by the legendary 427-cubic-inch race engine famous from a Le Mans-winning Ford GT40, branding the car the Shelby GT500 Super Snake in the process. Horsepower output was supposed to me 520 which still might have been underrated knowing Ford. Shelby will be building 10 examples for enthusiasts, priced at around $250,000.

“Their continuation” line allows them to bring classic cars back to today’s roads. “We’re fulfilling the dream of Carroll Shelby and Don McCain. Shelby built an engineering study dubbed the ‘Super Snake’ for high-speed tire testing by Goodyear in 1967,” he said. “The program never came to fruition, until now,” explained Shelby American president Gary Patterson.

Shelby will be outfitting the Supersnakes with a similar race-inspired 427 V-8  with hp numbers closer to 550. Both aluminum and cast-iron blocks will be available, backed by a four-speed manual transmission. Just like the original, the cars will have disc brakes and the famous triple stripes.

All chassis will be from a 1967 Mustang donor and will keep the original Ford VINs, but will include a specialized Shelby serial number for the official Shelby registry. Shelby also allows buyers to provide their own original 1967 Shelby to be upgraded at an additional cost.

    • I agree, the late Mr. Shelby and PT Barnum had more than a few things in common . . . and I don’t mean to disrespect the original Cobra roadsters and GT350/GT500 automobiles that established his name.

  1. Cool to see their using an FE, and keeping the original VIN makes registration much easier.

But $250K, for what’s basically a replica??? Ouch!

  2. If you call this a replica then I guess you called any book Godey made in the last 12 to 13 years a replica also. Both the Shelby and the Bugatti we’re company started by one person florist for many years and then essentially went out of business. Just because Pagani went out of business for decades makes it no different. The fact that for these 10 cars “Shelby“ intend to use original frames is a value add her but it is also likely more of an attempt to be able to avoid omissions and safety standards that would be in effect apply if they created new serial numbers. Anyway, he’s 10 cars which I call “statues“ are never going to be driven more than 100 miles and like a statue will be put someplace on display in marveled by their “enthusiast“ owners who are merely buying them as investment. Within six months at least half the cars will have already passed through an auction. At auction another “enthusiast“ will buy these cars for another $50-$100,000 more. And that’s assuming that these cars will actually sell for 250. These cars are not being built to continue Shelby name or reputation or any of that. They are simply being billed as a marketable product. And, there’s absolutely nothing wrong with that. Well if you’re so marriage go out there knocking down less than 100 K a year were moaning the fact that you won’t be able to buy one of these, you would’ve never been able to buy one of these so quick morning. He’s cars are simply build to be a statue no different then a piece of expensive art or any other collectible. These are not being billed for any purpose like the original Shelby‘s were which were to race and Drive. They are simply Jewel right now. And that jewelry comes at about 40 K a letter.
