The dragstrip in Pomona, Calif., internationally known as the site of the Lucas Oil NHRA Winternationals and the Auto Club NHRA Finals, also forms the northwestern border of a 487-acre facility known as Fairplex, which serves Los Angeles County year-round. Last month, Fairplex announced a partnership with Sowing Seeds for Life from La Verne Calif., to use the dragstrip as a drive-through food pantry on the first and third Wednesday of each month until the pandemic concludes.

Food will be given to all county residents in need with correct ID who drive in Gate 17 between the hours of 9 a.m. and 1 p.m., or until supplies last. Residents will stay in their cars while protectively-clothed volunteers load boxes of food into the vehicles. According to the Daily Bulletin, over 1,600 vehicles took part in the first food pantry event, held April 1, 2020.

“We’re glad to partner with Sowing Seeds, which is an established food pantry in this community. They have a strong base of volunteers that worked with the LA Food Bank to get these supplies,” said Fairplex CEO Miguel Santana to the Daily Bulletin. Joyce Johnson, a spokesperson with Sowing Seeds, added, “It’s a lot of work to put this kind of operation together but we know this is when our services are needed the most.”

  1. It’s great to see this taking place, this is all people pulling together in this disaster. super good work to all the people behind this project. I am a big Drag Race person good to see them using the track in a positive way.

  2. I am really impressed to see this, I am a small time drag racer and so I watch all NHRA races. But to utilize the facility for a special need is a blessing.

  3. It is such a blessing to see how people here in our great country pull together to help each other. To those who helped make this project happen, you are the best!
If only our Government would take notice and start working together instead of fighting against each other! PLEASE!!
