NC Gov. Roy Cooper Declares Ace Speedway an ‘Imminent Hazard’ and Closes the Track

In a follow up from our previous article, Gov. Roy Cooper has ordered Ace Speedway to close after the facility violated his executive orders against mass gatherings closed immediately, declaring the venue an imminent hazard.

Gov. Cooper and Dr. Mandy Cohen with the North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services partnered with NASCAR to find a way to have the Coca-Cola 600, and they developed specific protocols for a safe event that were followed. She said they repeatedly asked for ACE’s compliance, but that didn’t work. Dr. Cohen says they need to show that they take this seriously.

“Mass gatherings do spread the virus,” said Cohen, the state’s DHHS secretary who signed the order closing the speedway. “It was irresponsible for them to keep operating in the way they were doing.”

The speedway’s next scheduled night of racing is June 19.

“This speedway has knows that the (mass gathering) order is in existence and has flagrantly violated the order and put their customers in danger as well as anyone who has come into contact with their customers,” Cooper said during a Tuesday news conference.

The order said Ace Speedway must notify the public by 5 p.m. Tuesday that its upcoming race schedule and other events are canceled until June 26. The speedway’s website and Facebook page had not yet done so as of 5 p.m. Tuesday.

Sheriff Terry Johnson also issued a response.

“It puts me in a heck of a position as a sheriff, and any sheriff in this state, to try to write a citation to enforce the governor’s order when in fact it’s a constitutional violation in my opinion and the other sheriffs in this state,” Johnson said.

  1. I deplore police violence as do many of others! But, Its a good thing they didn’t schedule the funersal service for poor Mr Floyd (his death was clearly sad & unjustified!) in the State of North Carolina. However, Why was it OK for those folks to invite 500 guests to that service in Texas and ignore everyones warnings about spreading the virus that has killed SO many other good citizens??
This is a sad and confusing time in our Country! Lets pray for guidance and a vaccine soon!

  2. The governor should go hide in his closet.
If PEOPLE feel they need to not be around other people or have health issues they can choose to stay home.
This isn’t Nazi Germany we have the right to make up our own minds. This thing is blown WAY out of proportion.
Common sense isn’t so common anymore

  3. Another freedom lost! I don’t see them shutting down stores or mass gathering of the peaceful protests. Where is this country headed?

  4. Cooper is the biggest disgrace to this state since the corrupt bev perdue. Cooper is a typical leftist assshat that thinks he can dictate whatever he wants. It’s time that we conservatives stop compromising and start eradicating this threat to humanity. As a biologist, it amazes me that the supposed government health experts are able to get away with the lies they have been perpetrating and passing off as science. This entire covid pandemic is a fraud and all involved in this fraud should be prosecuted.

    • HOOOO_RAAAY ..for you ! I’ve been saying similar-things, for a long-time now ! ..I declared, that this so-called ‘virus’….is nothing-more than an excuse to see just how-much, ‘the left’ ….can get away with !! And now their starting [once again] with the ‘Police-brutality’ crap !
These ‘people’ ….must be stopped !!!!

  6. I totally agree with the sheriff, no governor o doctor in charge should have the power to mandate that a place has to going out of business. Ultimately is anyone responsibility to judge if its worth to take the risk attending those events.

  7. The Gov’s not shutting down Walmart and they’re packed everyday.

We’ve been seeing some great racing here in the southwest where we’ve been watching Tony Stewart, Kyle Larson, and host of others racing 2 to 4 times per week to filled tracks and grandstands. Oklahoma, Texas mult-state area racilng several times per week
