Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series and dirt racing phenom star Kyle Larson was back in the Winner’s Circle last night at the Lucas Oil Chili Bowl Nationals presented by General Tire. After grabbing the lead on Lap 6 of Tuesday night’s Warren CAT Qualifying Night A-Feature, the young California native went unchallenged for his eighth championship event.
Although Larson’s No. 01 Keith Kunz and Curb-Agajanian Motorsports ride started on the outside of the No. 5D Zack Daum Daum Motorsports Toyota, the young motorsports star began testing his fellow competitor at both the top and bottom of Tulsa Expo Raceway within the first five laps before racing past Daum on Lap 6.
“That might be the second time I got past Zach Daum on a prelim night,” said Larson.
Larson continued to outpace the field in last night’s A-Main feature until the caution lights lit up on Lap 16 when Kyle Jones spun his No. 7 in front of the race leader. After avoiding this crash, Larson brought the field up to speed on the restart and began to once again battle now second-place Daum.
Larson once again saw his lead challenged in the last five laps of this 55-Lap feature after the No. 99 of Larry Wright blew up throwing out the final caution. The final restart would leave second-place Zach Daum a sitting duck behind a field that continued to chase Larson for the lead.
Despite the No. 8J of Jonathan Beason battling for his chance at least a runner-up finish, Daum continued to hold off his challenger for second, but was unable to catch up to the driver who took his chance at a second-night feature win.
“My No. 01 McDonald’s ride was great last night,” said Larson. “I can’t thank my team, or my sponsors McDonald’s and iRacing, enough for making this all happen. Now it’s time to go out and get a Driller on Saturday.”
