Mobil 1 Oil To Remain the Factory Fill for the Chevrolet Corvette

Z06 and C7.R

The Chevrolet Corvette is a high performance machine, both on the street and on the track, a legacy of automotive engineering. Mobil 1 racing and performance oils also represent the best in automotive technical engineering. It’s no wonder these two superstars continue to solidify their partnership with a recent announcement that Mobil 1 would remain the oil of choice in new ‘Vettes. The oil and gas giant recently announced a new lubricants technology agreement with General Motors (GM) for the Chevrolet Corvette, which includes Mobil 1™ motor oil as the factory fill for the upcoming 2015 Corvette Z06 and the current 2014 Corvette Stingray with the Z51 Performance Package.

Chevrolet also named Mobil 1 5W-30, which  meets or exceed the GM dexos1® specifications, as the recommended service fill for all Corvette models on the street, while 15W-50 is recommended for on-track and high-performance applications.

“Because of the performance demonstrated by Mobil 1 over the years, this has been a natural fit for both parties,” says Roger Hood, US Motorsports Technical Advisory for ExxonMobil. “GM knows that a high performance engine needs a high performance oil.  Mobil 1 started the synthetic oil category 40 years ago and has a record of excellence. Our new technology provides outstanding high and low temperature performance, which is great for the track and for the street.”

The relationship between ExxonMobil and GM is hardly new. Since 1993, the two automotive giants have been working together to guarantee performance results in high-performance vehicles, like the Corvette. Mobil 1 motor oils are designed at the molecular level and enhanced with a proprietary additive system to provide outstanding protection against wear, high heat, cold weather and sludge buildup.

The secret is in the additives that Mobil 1 adds to their lubricants. Instead of using a pre-mixed recipe of additives (like a baking mix), ExxonMobil’s formula is proprietary and individual; they make their cake from scratch. It’s that particular mix which creates the peak performance standard.

“The quality of the base stocks without the additives which impart high and low temperature properties is important as well,” explains Hood. “You really see this with a cold start – engine oil will pump very quickly. When it’s cold, the oil moves through the engine more quickly than a normal oil, protecting the engine components from damage.”

“It is a testament to ExxonMobil’s commitment to advanced lubricant technology that Chevrolet has chosen Mobil 1 synthetic motor oil for the high-performance Corvette engines,” said David Tsurusaki, strategic global alliance manager, ExxonMobil Fuels & Lubricants.

Mobil 1 lubricants also power Corvette Racing’s C7.R in the TUDOR United SportsCar Championship.  Use of this oil in the race series helps Mobil 1 develop the technology for use on the street, and it also is a good reminder that when using your Corvette in both situations, it’s always best to drain out the regular oil and replace it with race oil when taking it to the track.

“15W50 oil is one of the original racing oils,” says Hood, “We’ve been advocating for years for folks to take the 5W30 out and put the race oil in.” To solidify their alliance, and show how committed they are to this performance, as of this factory roll out, the suggestion will now be in the Corvette owners manual.

  1. I know a lot of people prefer to use newer oils (like Royal Purple) and claim they are better than Mobil 1. I am old enough to have been around when Mobil 1 first hit the market. I was an early adopter and have never thought twice about the quality or protection Mobil 1 shown over all of these years. I run it in everything from my Corvette to my wife’s Kia Optima. My pickup trucks ( I have 5) all use Mobil 1. The oldest shop truck I have has just 165K miles on it and uses NO oil. It seems to be at the point where it is just getting broken in. I’ll stay loyal to Mobil 1. It’s been good to me for too many years to change now.
