McLaren Racing Inks Agreement with American Karting Phenom

McLaren Racing is taking on a rising star in the karting ranks who just happens to be from the United States, signing an agreement with newly-crowned FIA European karting champion Ugo Ugochukwu. The 13-year-old American racer already had several titles on his resume prior to earning his latest European karting crown.
The agreement between Ugochukwu and McLaren Racing provides the Formula One entrant with an option on Ugo’s services in the future, while it will go about supporting his development and evolution, as the young racer progresses through junior categories of motorsport.
This isn’t the first time McLaren has championed an up-and-coming racer, as former principal Ron Dennis took Lewis Hamilton under the company’s wing and assisted him through a variety of stepladders before the now-seven-time World Champion climbed into a McLaren F1 car.
“We’ve been watching Ugo’s progress with interest,” noted McLaren Racing CEO Zak Brown, “so when the opportunity to sign an agreement with him became available, we had no hesitation moving on it. Now we’ll focus on giving Ugo the right support when he needs it, to help him fulfill his potential.”
The New York-based driver began competing in his home state in 2013 and has raced extensively in the US as well as in Europe. Ugo’s resume includes championships in the following series; 2014 Micro Rok USA Championship, 2015 Florida Winter Tour Micromax Championship, 2017 International Open X30 Mini Championship, 2017 All Star X30 Mini Championship, 2018 Challenge of the Americas Rok Junior Championship and the 2020 FIA OKJ World Championship. He currently competes in the OK Senior class in Europe.
“I’m honored to be signed by such an iconic team as McLaren Racing so early in my career,” Ugochukwu said. “To have the support of McLaren is fantastic and what any young driver dreams of. I’m focused right now on developing as a driver and racer, so having McLaren by my side can only help me on and off the track.”
If McLaren is able to steer the young driver into success racing cars after his karting competition and he’s capable of making his way to the pinnacle of the sport, Formula One, his ascendance would mark the first time any American graced the F1 grid since Scott Speed’s short-lived career with Red Bull that began in 2005, where he raced with Toro Rosso in 2006-7.
