While former NASCAR star Kyle Larson has been blowing up the charts lately in his World of Outlaws NOS Energy Drink return, there is another driver who gave the rest of the competition the boot at this weekend’s Boot Hill Showdown at Dodge City Raceway Park.
Young Wooster, OH native Sheldon Haudenschild arrived at the 3/8 mile dirt track in Dodge City, KS where he pulled the No. 2 out of the NOS Energy Drink redraw can, which set him up for a runner-up finish in the DIRTVision Fast Pass Dash and a front-row starting spot for Saturday night’s 30-lap NOS Energy Drink Feature.
While Parker Price-Miller jumped out to an early lead, it would not take long before Haudenschild would thread the needle to sail into the lead within the opening laps of this feature race. From there the young 27-year-old firehouse displayed a powerful speed and swiftness, especially in lapped traffic, that was not seen by any of his competitors.
Like the intensity that he displayed in last year’s Ironman 55, by Lap 14, Haudenschild’s NOS Energy Drink No. 17 held a three second advantage over the 22 car field and with 10 laps to go, the hard-charging driver used the top side of this popular dirt track to keep a 5.5-second lead over the competition.
Even after the caution flag flew in the closing laps, Haudenschild continued to open a gap back up before the finish and he even stuck it right on the top side and got back to work on the restart, which gave him the chance to lead the field to the checkers on the final lap for his 12th career World of Outlaws Feature win.
“I cannot even stress how much this win means to me,” said Haudenschild. “It definitely helped to start on the front row and to get through the laps the way that we did alongside of those guys. Parker was really good, but just one little, not even really mess-up, he just lost his speed there and I was able to go around him and I just took off from there.”
Haudenschild’s latest feature win has catapulted him into the top-5 in point standings as the World of Outlaws NOS Energy Drink Sprint Car Series heads to Devil’s Bowl Speedway, in Mesquite, TX, for the Texas Outlaw Nationals next Saturday, September 19th.
